I am currently shopping for a new credit card... one that will give me some type of cash back or rewards. My current one gives 1% cash back on all purchases every month. Can I do better? What are your favorites?
Dh has challenged me to see who can find the best deal, so of course I came straight here to ask you all
Moms know best, right?
I am preparing to be dazzled

We have one from Citibank/Mastercard that gives 5% back on most purchases.
Since we don't keep a running bill and we pay the bill off every month they are paying us for using it!!!

my favorite is my amazon visa -- obviously i use it a lot for shopping at amazon, but i also accumulate cash back -- and i asked that it be automatically put in my "bank" account with them. so every now and then i go shopping at amazon and realize i could order things "for free". TOO.MUCH.FUN.
5% sounds way better though, Jen -- i think i only get 2% back from the Amazon card. gotta check that out!!

When my dh and I got married we chose a card that would give air miles: CitiCard/AAdvantage. We knew that flying places would be one expense that would quickly become a costly extra. We've had the card for 13 years now and together have been on 3 trips to the east coast, 4 on the west coast and I just recently flew with my daughter to Guatemala. Each trip has cost us the airport tax only; less than $50 each! Our account still has about 4 domestic roundtrips on it, and continues to accumulate.
We were told that the miles would not be affected by the recent American Airline issues, but if the company seizes I figure we got a lot from them already. I'm sure CitiCard will transfer those points somewhere else.
Like Jen, our monthly bill gets paid off so we have never had balances. We use it for everything that takes credit card payment except Costco and maybe restaurants.
The American Express Costco card gives you 1% on purchases, 2% restaurants and 3% on Costco Gas! So that is a little rebate at the end of the year that we enjoy too.
But for starters that 5% sounds pretty good.

Thanks for all these great ideas... I didn't even realize that Amazon would do that. 5% back sounds tempting, too. So do the plane tickets.
I also have a discover card which can offer great deals, but I don't like having to sign up for their specials, and then there always seems to be some cap or limit.
And dh doesn't want to have a lot of cards. I recently cancelled my Old Navy cc- just wasn't using it much at all.
What I really want is the Homeschooling Mom Visa that gives 10% back on book purchases

Question on the cash back cards -- do they max out? The ones I've looked at give you cash back up to a certain amount per year. Since we put *everything* on our credit card and then pay it off each month, we'd max out on all the cards I've seen. With our current card we earn points for dollars spent and then can cash out after a certain number of points. It ends up working out to 1% cash back without a cap. But I'm looking to switch cards to something better too...

I found NerdWallet this weekend. It has lots of info on credit cards and there's a calculator on the left side of the page that can help pick the best offer for you. I'm sure they don't have all credit cards available but I found a better deal through them than I was able to come up with on my own.

As much as I love a good deal I struggle with the fact that many of the major cc companies--Chase, Bank of America and others are planned parenthood suppoters. This has often kept me from getting a rewards type credit card in the past. I do not have Life Decisions International's current boycott list--they update quarterly and are the most thorough--but if anyone find's a major CC not on their list I would love to hear about it. I currently just have my bankcard and a VISA from a smaller company.

This is the main reason I am looking to ditch my Bank of America rewards card as soon as I can.
I found this pro-life card, but I'm a little leary of signing up for something I know so little about.
I really love the idea though.

We do the Amazon Visa which is 3% back on Amazon, 1% everywhere else with frequent specials for 3-5% off thing like gas or dining out. We buy a LOT on Amazon so it's a great deal for us. We put everything but the mortgage on it, pretty much, and have never maxed out the rewards which we get as straight cash (it used to be only Amazon gift cards but it changed recently). It works out to several hundred dollars a year, I think. We pay it weekly and never carry a balance.
But, Stef, you shouldn't use the points to shop on Amazon! I don't think you get any cash back when you pay with their points :)

If you have a Fidelity Investments account, their credit card gives you the option of automatically depositing your rewards into your account, OR you can use it towards flights, merchandise, etc. You get more if you invest it than if you spend it otherwise.
