Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Another small blogging matter ~

I notice when I click on a link in my blog the window changes to the new site (i.e. my page becomes an amazon page). But on some blogs, if I click on a link, a new window opens, so the original page is left intact.

Is this a setting of some sort? I ask because this is how I easily lose myself in cyberspace clicking on one link after another and forgetting where I started!

Yes, there's a difference in the code for the link. To make a link open in a new window, do this:

<a href="http://www.yourlinkhere.com">Your text here</a>

(Or I think target="new" works too.)

Funny you should bring it up. I was going to suggest that if you put a link in a blog to make sure it opens to a new page. So like Lissa suggests: <a href="http://www.yourlinkhere.com" target="new">Your text here</a> would be required for the new page to open. It helps for the reader...I kept losing my place in all the blogs!!

O.K. I'm going to illustrate my *extreme* lack of savvy when it comes to computers ...

Where do I do this? When I create a link in a post I'm composing, I click that little "link" icon and a menu pops opens in which I can type the link ....

Is this where I write the new code you gave me? I tried doing that and it doesn't seem to be reading it correctly.

Or do I switch to the "Edit html" version of my post and overwrite the code in there?

Ack! All these terms are completely foreign to me ... I may need to wait for dh to come home. I hate being helpless but unfortunately computing is not my strong point!

OK, you've stumped me! You're talking about Typepad, right? (As opposed to here.)I wonder if this is a Mac vs PC thing, because I don't see any link icon on the screen where I compose a Typepad post. I always just enter the HTML manually.

So let me see if I understand: when you go to Typepad and click "new post," it takes you to a screen with boxes for Post Title and Post Body, right? Above the Post Body box, I have two small icons--one for inserting a photo, one for inserting a file. I checked all the options for settings and I don't see anywhere to click to insert a link. I use a Mac, so I'm wondering if that's why it's different. Anyone know?

Anyway, Dawn, here's an example of how my text looks in the Post Body box:

The new <a href="http://themagicschoolbus.blogspot.com/2006/04/carnival -of-education_12.html">Carnival of Education</a> is up—enjoy!

I keep a few snippets of code (like this: <a href=""></a>) in a file on my desktop for easy copy-and-pasting.

Yes, I click Create a Post, then it opens a "Compose a New Post" box to write in. Above it is Title and Category and then there is a bar of icons to choose from: text size and styles, insert link (looks like a chain link), insert email, begin quote/end quote, ordered or unordered list, insert image, insert file and spell check.

To do a link I always click the link icon and, much like here in the forum, a bar opens into which I write (paste usually) the link, click OK and then another bar comes up and I write in the link text for the post.

There are two other "buttons" Compose a Post, in which I usually work, and another called Edit HTML which refreshes the box and my message is all in code. I have only ever used the HTML option when entering a Blogthings quiz (like the coffee one).

I will continue to try to figure this out. Lissa, thanks SO much for your patience and all your help here! I really find Typepad easy to use, but I also find my lack of computing knowledge can make it hard for me to keep up!

I think it's a Mac/PC issue because I see what Dawn sees. Frankly, it is easier to do it the PC way if we can only figure out how to tweak it so a new window opens.

I'm on a PC. All you have to do it go to the edit html screen and add the extra to the code there. I use target="_blank" and it works fine. I just updated my most recent posts and all links now open in a new page. I knew how to do this (I do it on my website) but didn't think about it for the blog.

God bless!

Oh my goodness, I did it!

I went into my "True Confessions" post from yesterday and clicked on the Edit HTML tab. Then I re-wrote the area of code that corresponded to my link to Amy's blog, following the guidelines Lissa and Jenn gave me. It took several attempts, but finally, when I checked my blog and the link in that post, it opened up A NEW WINDOW!

Now to figure out how to do this in the link bar, rather than having to go into the html ...

I have tried but if they are made with a typelist other than "Notes" I can't seem to get it to work. There's no where that let's you get at the html. I checked Lissa's site too and except for her ads her links don't open in a new window either.

God bless!

It might be your settings. On the screen where you compose a post, scroll down a little bit to where it says Customize the display of this page and click on it. Set it to Rich text ("WYSIWYG") and you get both screens. Set it to Plain Text and you get one screen. Try it and see if it works.

God bless!

Nope, I already had it on Rich Text. How strange! Guess it really is a Mac thing.

Wow!! I don't have any of those options, except insert image and insert file. All the rest I have to do manually—had no idea you PC users had it so easy!

Yes, only the links I enter manually in the notes section open in a new window. And even then, if I'm linking to another page of my own blog (like in my Bonny Glen Highlights) section, I don't have it open a new window because I figure the reader doesn't need TWO Bonny Glen windows open.
