Is there anyone on the forum that has expertise in web designs? I have hired a local lady to design my web site. While I really like her, we didn't communicate well on what I wanted vs. what work she did.
I have the "dummy site" that she made up for me and I would like to get a second opinion on her work and possible directions to go with it i.e. stick with her and get it to where I want it or cut my losses and find someone else.
Thanks to anyone who can offer help in this art form that I haven't learned (yet!).

I don't do much with it anymore because I simply don't have the time these days, but a site that helped me a lot when I was designing websites was
w3 schools
i like that you can try out their instructions and see what happens.
learning basic html is #1, then css is #2.
you can also get plugins/extensions for your browser that will help you edit certain elements on a website.
a list of firefox addons
when you activate it, you can learn by seeing how others design their stuff, observing what codes do, etc.
i'm so rusty though that i can't give anymore specific advice than that. there's so much new stuff out there like php and asp and javascript and i don't know what else you'd need to learn to design a website from scratch, so posting this for what it's worth...

ps -- betsy i empathize. i paid someone once to design a website for me, and she was not able to deliver at all -- i mean her design was nice, but it really did not match my vision of what i wanted, so i still had to pay her but i ended up not using her design at all.

I use Wordpress for my sites. They are easy to manipulate and there are a lot of options out there, including storefronts.
There are many good hosting companies including ones run by Catholic moms.
Also, if you see a site you really like check to see if there is a link at the bottom to the site designer. There often is.

Make that I use Wordpress for MOST of my sites. My homemaking journal is on Squarespace.

I would love to offer my opinion if you still need one ;)
I've been helping a close friend of mine develop and design several websites. I don't know near what he does, but I might be able to offer something.
I have found that there are some things that just can't be done. without *serious* programming. But a web developer should be up-front about that (at least as soon as they figure out that something is almost impossible).

Hi Betsy,
I have been really sick all week, so I haven't volunteered. Now I am on the mend. Dh and I both learned HTML and CSS and developed our website from scratch. We do know a pretty good amount about these two computer languages, and website design.. We'd be willing to take a look at what you have and give an opinion, if you'd still like one.
We're praying for you in this. We know how time consuming and frustrating this kind of thing can be!

Thanks for that link, Syncletica.
At this time I have suspended work with this designer. She was lovely, but just didn't have the right expertise or design skills for what I needed.
I need to take a good hard look at how feasible it will be do do this myself or farm it out to someone more qualified.
