Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Is there Catholic teaching that informs us how to react to team names like Devils, Demons, or Wizards?

My guess is that no one on this board would choose these names for a team if they started one! But there are established teams with names like this, for example ASU Sun Devils, and from time to time I hear people being genuinely concerned and stressed about them. I don't want to be glib but I tend to see names as a way for teams to make a statement about wanting to be fierce and competitive.

Thanks!

Love,

I don't know of any Catholic teaching off the top of my head that addresses that.

I do know that there's a lot of superstition surrounding speaking of the devil.. the phrase "speak of the devil" in it's entirety would be "speak of the devil and he shall appear". And I know that superstition is frowned upon by the Catholic Church.. it was even in a list for examination of conscience at our Advent penance service.

In culinary terms to "devil" something is to make it (usually minced) spicy (hot)or savory. And I know many people who won't use the term deviled like deviled eggs.. rather they say stuffed eggs or angel eggs

And in terms of useage for team names.. someone isn't likely to say "I'm a Devil" but is usually spoken in as a collective.. "we're the Devils" and with "the" in there so that it's more a title.

So I guess I found lots to say to say I don't know

Angie,
I have pondered this many time, and I don't have much to offer!

However, one thing that has helped me is to look into the history of how the team got it name/nickname. One example is the Duke Blue Devils. The Blue Devils get their name from the French Soldiers in WWI.

While I still don't care for the name or mascot I think it helps to knowing the history of how it came about and that it wasn't intended as a direct diabolic reference.

Besides that I am all ears to any solid Catholic teaching on the subject.

I don't know anything about a Catholic teaching but this morning there was an email sitting in my inbox titled "Magic - First Practice" from someone I didn't know and I thought, "What on earth? This has got to be spam!" Turns out that's ds' basketball team name and they're starting practice this week. These types of names don't distress me either, but the email title did!
