Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi Moms~

Do you give a Christmas gift to your parish priest? If so, what?

I had a friend recommend we give cash--I feel funny about that--but she made a good point in that he does need to spend his own money on gas and other items...and I do know his spiritual director is 1.25 hours away...

But still...feel a bit awkward about that...

Any suggestions?

We have had Masses said or done a spiritual bouquet for our Priests in the past.

I would think that giving cash would probably depend on the priest, but I am all for practical. So, I don't think that it would necessarily be inappropriate.

Our parish priest loves food so I always give homemade stuff. And he has other priests come visit him sometimes so there's plenty he can share.

How about a gas card? And homemade treats of course.

Our priests always seem to have dietary restrictions. Sometimes a nice bread instead of treats is good. I'm hoping the soap I've made will set up nicely and I can give that.

Some other homemade things that might be nice would be some home canned soups or spaghetti sauce ( I do meatless so the pressure canning time is lower) but it is nice to have a homemade meal to just heat and eat.

As a matter of fact I've done the speghetti sauce with a small bag of noodles and a bottle of wine to make a nice gift basket.

A gift card might be a nice alternative to cash, if that feels awkward. Otherwise, I do think food is greatly appreciated -- I know that our pastor eats on the run all the time, pretty much living on protein bars, so a heat-up meal would be a treat for him.

We've also given a gift subscription to a magazine -- First Things, Lay Witness, Latin Mass, etc. -- to a priest who has been a particular friend to our family, and who we know would read and appreciate a particular magazine.

I've usually given gift cards for restaurants, since our priests usually log lots of road hours living in the boonies. This year I've gotten Fr. a mousepad made at Zazzle with the Happy Saints St.Pio. ;-) Sh--h-h.. it's a surprise!
