Hi Everybody!
My son wants an ipod touch. His older brother has one and he wants one so badly. He doesn't have any other hand held device where he can play games but, I am not sure I should buy him such an expensive gadget with Wi-Fi.
Would you or have you? why or why not?
thanks so much for any help in deciding this!

Hi Natalia!
We have had conversations on this before, but I couldn't find a certain thread. The general concern is that there are no parental locks on the Touch as compared to some other electronic gadget.

Yes, I figured you have talked about it before! I tried to search before I asked but, couldn't find anything.
If somebody could direct me to a pertinent thread, I'll appreciate it.

It seems that there is a way to disable the wi-fi access according to this discussion on the Apple website

I"m struggling with this and my son is 14!!!
It's all he really wants-for the second Christmas in a row, and all his friends have them (Why can't they just go outside and play? )

Thanks, Natalia. I'm going to have dh look into this more.
I have heard though, the kids have figured out how to get around the "parental controls." And they share that info freely with others. Need to check into this more.

DS 11 1/2 does have Nintendo DS but for the reasons you cited we're not "moving up" yet. Expense (how many times has the DS been misplaced? ummm...MANY!), internet control, AND

Well, considering I JUST NOW caught my 16yo checking Facebook from his iPod touch when he was supposedly reading, I say only get it if you have the energy to regulate it. Grrr!!

My husband has one, but we don't allow anything like that for our children. We don't even allow them to use the computer without an adult present. The little ones are not allowed to use the computer at all, the oldest (13) only if he wants to research something we can't find in a book. I think it's completely unnecessary for children, even teenagers, to use all the newest things out there. My husband, a professor, has found that with the rise of the computer and all the new little gadgets the ability of his students to write well has gotten progressively worse. Some students can't even read cursive anymore (my husband comments on papers in cursive)!

The brilliant minds that set our state's curriculum have eliminated handwriting (cursive) from our public schools! They want to allow more time for advancing computer usage. As if today's children need anymore time to learn how to use it! To borrow a scene from "Home Alone 2" :
Cedrick the Bellman: Do you know how the TV works?
Kevin McCallister: I'm 10-years-old. TV is my life.

we got the iPod touch for a family gift one New Year.... 2 years later I'm the only one using it because every time I disable the password they'd go purchase or download games -- and it's not the games themselves that are bad (they do ask permission for purchasing and only get cheap 99 cent games), i've checked them out. it's the SEARCHING for the games that's the problem. i tried searching once and i couldn't believe the porny stuff that comes out when you put in one or two keywords you think are completely harmless. so NO MORE. if i ever allow them to use it, i disable the apple store and i've also changed the password on the apple store on the desktop computer so they can't ever download anything, and (so far) that discourages them from even trying. agree with Theresa -- only if you have the energy (and the tenacity) to regulate it!!

I think Indiana did the same (or made cursive optional).

Thanks so much for the responses! You have put into words a lot of what I was thinking. We decided not to let him have an ipod touch just yet. I know it will come again. He has his own money (that boy never spends a cent!) that he has saved over the years. He could pay for it cash right now but, since he hasn't mentioned that possibility yet, I am not going to either
I really don't need one more thing to police right now!

Wow, really??? I have had my Ipod Touch for a few years now (it helps me keep track of my annoying medicine schedule, among other things) and I have a few games on it that dd9 likes to play...but I have never run into anything objectionable when I search - ever. I must be lucky, thank goodness.

That's what DH and I are struggling with right now. Our oldest DS, who will be 10 next week, DOES have enough money and DOES want to spend it on an iPod Touch (or a tablet, if he can find one he likes). I've at least pushed it off until after Christmas, but DH and I have to have a serious talk about how to handle it.
