What would be some nice things to give a child (I am looking for the young and also for the teens)
that will help enhance their nature journaling experience to get them going again and inspire them?
I am looking for hands-on Christmas ideas here...maybe even a little kit or paints or pencils or...???
Trying to figure this all out...

what about some books on nature, maybe something about how to draw nature/animals.. some story books that would get them excited.. and then add the new supplies of a joural and pencils and such.. So that they can go out and use their new found knowledge and enthusiasm

Here are some of my ideas:
Tin Cups & Tinder: A Catholic Boy's Little Book of Fire, Food & Fun by Alice Cantrell has some very clever ideas that would incorporate the child having his own materials (and made by him/her) for nature study.
Did you see these round-up giveaways from Sew Mama Sew? I thought some of these would be perfect to enhance nature study:
Passion for Writing
A personal field bag made by Mom of materials of choice would be so grand!
Passion for Picnics
I have been toying with the idea of waterproof paper and journal, with a waterproof or astronaut pen that would write anywhere. That would appeal to the male side, to defy and test the elements.
For all ages, the waterbrushes are a delight.
There are watercolor travel sets, half pan watercolors that might be a wonderful delight to the older children, just a new box of paints.
There are two videos that really inspire for nature study, and that is one by Eve Anderson on nature study, and then the Watercolor Journaling.
Small field guides, magnifying glasses, ways to make the brushes portable and clean them easily without too much water.
I can dream big, but those beautiful little wooden easels to bring outdoors...like this little tabletop easel.
Nice water bottle, field glasses, books on journaling for inspiration (like the Country Diary series).

Stickers and Dover coloring books have been helpful here when interest has dwindled. Sometimes the idea of hand drawing a detailed butterfly or plant is too much, so the Dover books have been especially helpful there. They can trace or color, cut out, and glue into their journal.
My boys were really inspired by these pan watercolors. It was fun for them to take them on a little hike through the neighborhood and paint right on the spot.

I ditto all of Jenn's ideas and might add a few that are nice and compact for nature hikes:
Koi Watercolor Field Kit
Strathmore Watercolor Paper Journal
Magnifying glasses: we have some that came in a bug kit from Lakeshore that is similar to this one. They've put flowers, leaves, rocks and bugs in it. My daughter owns this flower magnifying glass (she's gotten a lot of use from it .
We have a couple of Discover toy binoculors that the kids like for seeing birds.
I think that the better they can see and explore the more interesting it is to put it in their journals.

Yes, we love these little compact kits for on the spot journaling I'll have to check this brand out too.
