Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My sister's baby is going to be my godchild and I would like to start the tradition of giving her a religious gift every Christmas (in addition to a regular gift that I would give any niece). I had thought about a cross, but I know that each of my kids got about 10 of those for their baptisms. What would be a good religious gift to give a baby. I don't mind if she can't make use of it now.

A statue/picture of her patron saint, first or middle name.

A book about either patron saint.

A pretty rosary.

These are all meaningful when the child gets older, even if not now.

Some of the gifts our children have gotten from godparents, that are lovely and meaningful, a beautiful crucifix, a small statute of the Infant of Prague, a lovely rosary with heart shaped beads for our daughter.

A gift that little ones can use/enjoy a little sooner, are nice plastic statues, they make a lovely introduction to the saints, Jesus, and Mary. Also nice saint books with lovely pictures are a nice one for little ones to start enjoying the Faith.

A holy water font for the child's room is nice. Children can learn about holy water very early. I bless our babies with holy water right from the start, and they learn to anticipate it before they are even a year old. Our 2 yo twins love blessing themselves with holy water.

These are a lovely gift. and here is a blog post about the crocheted roses.

What an honor to be a godparent.

How about a framed religious print? That way the whole family can enjoy it while she grows into it.

Treasure Box books have been a huge hit here. You could give one for each birthday and Christmas until you have given the whole set. My 2 year old listens in when the olders have story time, and he loves them. I remember them well from when I was a kid. They really inspire a love for Jesus.

For our godchildren's first Christmas we always give them a wooden rosary (sorry no time to link right now) and one of those plastic statues of Mary that Pilgrim is talking about.

Now one of the best baby from godparent gifts we ever got was for our oldest daughter. Her godmother bought a few laminated holy cards, 8 I think, that were special to her and our family as well and then punched a hole in the top and put them all on a ring. This little "toy" was packed in my purse and was brought out at every Mass. My little girl knew those saints better than most of her family members by the time she was 2. At the beginning they were just slobbered on but later they became a wonderful comfort to her. To this day, at age 11, she still loves St. Cecilia and that one holy card picture is very special to her.

We loved the idea so much that I made one for each of my children as they were born.

Congrats on being a godmother. It truly is a gift:)

One of my children was given an interactive cloth book on Creation called In the Beginning (made by Pockets of Learning) for her first Christmas.

It's held up well to nearly two years of use as a Mass 'toy'.

The godparents of my oldest boy give him a figurine from a Fontanini nativity set each Christmas. He now has Mary, Joseph, Jesus and a few others. By the time he is grown he'll have a nice set of his own.

Thanks so much! I am definitely getting this. I am thinking of getting her a nice framed religious print for her baptism in January to hang in her nursery. Can anyone recommend a good one?

I LOVE the idea about the nativity set. I am going to do that when she is a little older!!!! You guys always come through for me. Thanks!

I'm bumping this with much gratitude for it! I'm the super-excited proud Godmother to 3 day old Anthony Ignatius ! Baptism soon.

Do you all have any additional recommendations for a baby boy...and one who is #7 in a very faithful family with many religious items in the home. Thanks!

Love,

I got my Goddaughter the In the Beginning book for Christmas. I purchased this print for her baptism in February. They have a framed print for a reasonable price, but my sister is so particular about only having black frames in her house that I just ordered the print so I can frame it myself.    Adoremus Books has lots of great baptismal gifts for little boys as well. Congrats!!!! This is my first time being a godparent and I am so excited!!!

Isn't it exciting Kristin! Thanks so much for sharing your ideas. I'm still undecided...so many lovely options!
