I wanted to stop by and put in a plug for The Mighty Macs which is opening in theaters this weekend (Friday, Oct. 21). I was fortunate to be invited (thanks teachingmom!) to the Washington, D.C. premier last night. It is a great movie! A great inspiration for girl athletes....really all athletes and our faith is portrayed in a positive, uplifting manner. Check out the website themightymacs dot com. I think you will like what you see. If you go see the movie and you like it....please, please, please....spread the word about it. I am sure it is not being advertised on the major networks or radio stations, so word of mouth is so important! We have heard ads for it on our local christian radio station . Hollywood listens with its wallets. I know a trip to the movies is expensive, but if we want family and faith friendly films we need to go see them!
God Bless!!

Oh, I saw the preview for this when DH and I went to see Courageous. I didn't know it was coming out so soon. Thanks for reminding me!

Hi Mary Chris and Irene!! Wish I could have gone with you to see this. :)
Here in San Diego, The Snowman and The Greatest Miracle are in theaters this weekend as well. The trailers to both look wonderful. We saw them at our recent pro-life conference and I know The Snowman is made by the same people that made Bella. I believe The Greatest Miracle is about the Mass.

I read a review I followed from waltzing matildas blog, you may want to read. The reviewer did not give it a good review. I want to link it for you, but I can not figure out how to do it from my iPad. If I do decide to see it, it will not because I think it's a good Catholic film.

I know Margaret in MN loved it, and I just read this review from the NCR by Matthew Archbold.

A lot of times I do depend on reviews of movies as to whether we will see it or not. I can be easily influenced by what my friends allow their families to do, so I do appreciate checking out what other people have to say. That being said, after reading a few reviews, I'm not sure what I think. Ian at www.catholicinformation.aquinasandmore.com made some good points. I LOVE any movie about sports, so I think we will watch it when it comes out on DVD, but purely for it's entertainment value.

Missy, also remember you have younger children, so reviewers will vary according to the ages of their children.

Your are right, Jennifer. That's why is can be so tricky trying to find the right movie we can all enjoy as a family. I kind of flow back and forth from being too protective and maybe a little too laid back when it comes to these things, I need to find a happy medium. I do appreciate you sharing the other reviews and sorry I didn't link the one I am referring too, I am so not computer saavy.

I cannot find this blog to read this review. So far, all the other reviews I've read have been great.

I think this may be the review you are looking for:Pop Culture in a Habit
I have no opinion on the subject because I have not seen the movie and probably will not. (It likely will not come here to our small town). Just passing on the link fyi.

I think that is very important. It helps to read from different perspectives to get a feeling for where something fits with your own standards. It is interesting to see how different faithful Catholic reviewers can look at the same scenes and come up with a different perspective. Catholic film critic, Steven Greydanus, of Decent Films has this review that I will add here as well.
And Michelle asked about the original review mentioned by Missy - at Waltzing Matilda - actually that blog article isn't a review since she hasn't seen it, but an analysis of and dialogue about some reviews. Might Macs Debate.
It is rare to find a perfect movie. This one is has flaws that have been pointed out and discussed.I think alot of the debate comes from how it is being marketed and if it lives up to that specific marketing vs. whether it is an overall wholesome and worthwhile movie.
In general I would be inclined to see it though maybe on dvd since we rarely actually get to the theater for first run - my children are all older, too. We really enjoyed Secretariat too last year - though my sister had some of the same "woman's lib " issues that have been mentioned for Mighty Macs (and Greydanus discusses that both for Secretariat and Mighty Macs in his review). Those issues didn't affect how I saw the movie (Secretariat), but they did for my sister. (I also grew up in the 70's and she only was born in the 70's - wonder if that makes a difference?). It is I think a stereotype of the era and very often movies promote stereotype - they exaggerate elements and bias. Anyway, just my thoughts.

I linked the Waltzing Matilda blog post as that is what I thought Missy was referring to. She has not seen the move and hers is a review of the dialogue on the topic. And Theresa directly linked to Ian's (Aquinas and More Catholic Bookstore) blog with his review, so looks like we have all the link bases covered.
