A new Georgetown MBA student and wife are expecting their first baby in Sept. and are moving here in July or August and have asked me for some help. I think I got chosen since I'm one of the only wives having babies, but with Bill in the military and us living on the MD side, I don't have much info.
They are trying to get recs for a midwife who delivers in a hospital, and they will probably live on the VA side of DC (usually Arlington area) or in the District near Georgetown. I know many of you have had good experieces over there. Any suggestions?

Rachel,
I have a friend who is a doula. She teaches in DC and helps in labor many times in DC. She lives in Manassas. I sent your request to her...so I might get some suggestions from her.

The doula should be a very good source of information.
I went to Physicians and Midwives Collaborative back in 1997 (before they were SO many doctors and midwives) and have friends who have had very good experiences with them.

My midwives are in Loudoun, which is not exactly close to DC. Loudoun Community Midwives. But they are really well-connected with the midwifery community and I'm sure that a phone call or two there would result in a referral closer in. Tell her to ask to speak to Margie or Wendy.

I know of three midwifery practices in that general area.
Birth Care in Alexandria, VA
I don't think they do hospital births, though.
The Maternity Center in Bethesda, MD
My niece was born here and my sister was very happy with it.
Special Beginnings Birth and Women's Center in Arnold, MD
About an hour from DC, but I know they do hospital births and all three of my kids' births (and we also live an hour from them) have been attended by these midwives and they are WONDERFUL!

I know other people that have had very good experiences with them. If they are going to take a Bradley class their instructor should have some resources.

I also used Birth Care with 2 of mine. With Ben we labored at the Birth Center (ended up with a C-section) and with Mary things finally went as I planned them and we had her at home. (With Gracie, I had planned for the hospital (vbac) and she surprised us at home! )
Nothing but great things to say about Birth Care!

Just out of curiousity, how well do these midwives handle difficult deliveries? I tend to have large babies. We're expecting our fifth in early November and my last delivery was pretty traumatic and I am wanting to avoid a c-section/epidural if at all possible this time around.
Oh and do any of you know how the Alexandria hospital is? At least compared to Fair Oaks?

I delivered at both--and two ohers . I MUCH prefer Alexandria to Fair Oaks. I worked in the Maternity Center there for years so I'm probably more familiar, but the atmosphere was much calmer to me than Fair Oaks.I had absolutely great care at Alexandria and a great birthing experience. I delivered with midwives affiliated with Dr. David Giammittorio (sp?). They're still there, to the best of my knowledge. And he's awesome. The midwife who attended my birth was Bev Johnson. I think she's in Fredericksburg now. I was at Fair Oaks two years ago as a labor coach and was pretty horrified by the nursing care.
My midwives now are in Loudoun and they're great with difficult labors. If you need a c-section you get MOlly's surgeon, who must know what he's doing--she's going back for a sixth c-section!

Thanks for the info! Its a good thing you weren't at Fair Oaks 4 yrs ago; you would have REALLy been horrified then! Never in my life had I wanted to call someone an awful name until that experience. All 4 of mine were there with Tepeyac and I've reached my limits with them so I'm looking for another practice. I've heard good things about David Giammittorio (boy, that's a mouthful!) so I'm glad you mentioned him, too. Thanks!

Just going to break in to "bookmark" how far I've gotten down this list. I edited all the suggestions into a word file and passed them along today, but I told her I would keep sending suggestions until she stopped me!Thanks for the help!

FYI: Dr. Giammittorio is the founding OBGYN at Physicians and Midwives Collaborative.

Well there you go! I'm dating myself. When I delivered with him--he actually didn't arrive until after Christian did ; it was all about the midwife--we were one of the first midwife deliveries at Alexandria. Ummmm,Christian was due April 19, 1992. Dr. G, bless his patient soul, allowed him to stay tucked up tight until May 6! FWIW, Christian does everything in his own time.

When you live through chemo the year before and you think you might never be pregnant again, you don't mind being pregnant forever. Being equally patient with him now is another story. This is his theme song: Shine--scroll all the way to the last song. I wish you could hear it sung!

I have a few friends who have used Birthcare and been very pleased. They would be a very convenient to someone in Georgetown or the Alexandria area. They will come to your home, or you can go to them at their Birthing Center.
