Just curious as we have an impending move in the near future how many of you tend to school year round? Or do you take the summer (Northern Hemisphere folks  ) totally off? Love to here how you do things at your house

It's not exactly year round, but we tend to do school in the cold of winter and heat of summer - then when the weather is perfect for going outside and the sun isn't too strong - like now and in September, we do much less formal schooling. Not that we done a whole lot of formal schooling since the baby's been born anyway ...

yes we do! we just do too much traveling (we like to go with dad for work) that it wouldn't work otherwise, we'd have too many missed days -- we do bring lessons when we're in hotels or on the road, but we probably do only half the work we planned to do. the kids are used to it, though. this year i'd like to do more of what amy's doing, since it looks like we don't have any major travel plans.

Meredith,
This is only my 2nd year homeschooling, but so far I plan to take the summers off. This year we're sort of taking the spring off too. 
In the summer we have relatives from across the country visit, there are cousins in our neighborhood around and other school kids that are outside playing, and the weather is usually great, so my kids just want to be outside playing. I guess we still read and do art regularly, but we don't call it "school."

Last "summer" we took it off (from April to Aug). This year Bill says we should keep going since we "don't do much anyway." He's having his usual homeschool reservations.....

We usually spend a lot more time on science in the summer. Once a week for an afternoon we do a more formal nature study, including journalling and identifying with our field guides. (Usually at our local arboretum.) Another family comes with us so sometimes it just becomes hiking and fun time! We also do more science experiments in the summer. I just never seem to get it done during the "school year".
We keep fresh on math a couple times a week and read alot of read alouds.
I have always been intrigued by the three months on, one month off type of terms but have never really adopted them here. Usually by August, the kids have had enough of "no schedule" and want to get back into the groove of a routine.

My dh is suggesting we do a modified school schedule through the summer. I'm not sure if I am fully on board with that, as I kind of like my summer vacation, but we may give it a go. I think it may just be reading and nature study and writing and such. Only the stuff ds would be doing anyway, so there may not be any noticeable difference between summer schooling and summer vacation! This also depends on how our unschooling experiment goes. We are going to try that after Easter for the rest of the school year.

I try and do a little math and reading every day with my special needs guy. Otherwise, I'm afraid he'd lose too much over the summer.
It's just about an hour and everyone else knows that there is no swimming, bike riding, etc, until John is done.

It's HOT here in the summer. Really HOT. Not much to do, and it is too hot to even be worth driving some days. So we will school full time then.
Now, December/January/February are just gorgeous here. So we take a lot of breaks then ( and there is so much going on in our state then too.)

We might use the summer to catch up here and there.
Also, we get rusty if we turn off all academics the whole summer long, so we usually keep up with a few things. Mostly science and nature study, lots of good books and some journaling.

We're completely total unschoolers during summer. I've tried academic table time and it fails to work every summer. I gave up last summer.
So we read and travel and unschool.

We school year 'round. It gives me margin for times when moving, or babies, or illness, or travel, or LIFE intervenes and we lose time. In the summer, we usually hit the pool early and stay through lunchtime, then come home and use the time from about 2-5 to do some lessons. This works when I have nappers too. Alternatively, we've gotten lessons out of the way really early and had the rest of the day to play. I try to encourage binge reading during the summer. I have fond memories of curling up under a huge oak, dripping with Spanish moss, eating one Georgia peach after another, while reading through the enitre Beany Malone and Cherry Ames series one summer.

We school year round for the same general reasons Elizabeth mentioned. Plus, for my littles it is best for the sake of memory.
And I like taking a week here and there off during the year w/o any guilt.
We need to try that pool schedule Elizabeth has this year!

I'm with Laura. We are very productive with indoor work during June, July, August, even into Sept. I feel so sorry for schooled kids here who have a summer break and have to stay indoors most of the time.
Our academic year begins July 1 and ends June 30. We "schedule" weeks off and move them around as needed. Even on our "off" weeks, we tend to do big projects, binge reading, or unit studies. We'll be off for the next two weeks to focus on Easter.

I love Elizabeth's pool schedule too!! We think we'll have a pool in the new location or at least close by Thanks for all your great responses, we have done most of these things too, it just seems such a shame to take such a huge break, everyone gets all willy-nilly when there's not enough directed goings on even if they are relaxed
We seem to maximize on our nature study as we will be outside more and doing the zoo and museums more in the Spring and summer. Happy Spring!

That's what's so great about unschooling during the summer months.
We go to the zoo, take a family vacation trip, the children go for a week to their cousins, and we take weekend camping trips. We go to a water park and beach too. 
The weeks we're home there's lots of fun playtime outside with friends and our town has a new Aquatic Center that opened last summer. Last summer we were there almost everyday at the water park.
To cool off and quiet down, I usually take the younger ones to storytime at the library every Tuesday.
It's also a chance for the dc to take the camps offered. My 8 yr old will go to an arts camp this summer and my 13 yr old will be involved in a golf camp. Last year he went to a skills camp and nature camp. I also try to find at least one good Catholic VBS for them to attend.
No, I'm not intentionally oversceduling them. My dh and I are very discerning about what they children get involved in. We have to look at logistics, other dc's schedules, and finances. There are also job schedules. My oldest is pretty much on his own but my 16 yr old will be looking for a part-time job this summer and my 13 yr old now works in our sideline business that my dh and a friend started.
The highlight of my summer is a trip the girls and I are taking with my mom. We plan to visit Mother Angelica's monastery, Helen Keller's house, and Flannery O'Connor's house.
Now you can see why table time is the last thing on my summer agenda. There's so much to do...so much to pick from. Summer's over before we know it. It's all a wonderful mesh of real learning.
