Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Wondering if anyone has heard of becoming a registered HSer in Michigan? My son is eligible for some speech work, but they are saying that we might need to be registered HSers (or students). I have never heard of this before here... Anyone come across this. Honestly, the "off the grid" in me doesn't like the sounds of it...

Check with HSLDA. I have never heard of anyone registering in MI.

Yeah - I am wondering if it is because of using their services. Not a big deal if I cannot, but it would be nice...

Wow, that surprises me. There are no restrictions on homeschoolers in MI. I don't know how one would be a "registered homeschooler" when there really isn't any sort of "homeschool registration system" in place. I agree with Bridget about checking with HSLD. I wonder if the speech therapist isn't aware of the laws. That sometimes happens. My friend, who was a superintendant of schools here was surprised to learn there isn't any sort of homeschool registration or any testing requirements. She learned it from me, after being a superintenant for years!

Do check with HSLD. I have heard of registering in Michigan. My "understanding" is that it is not legally required. (I attended a session by a HSLD lawyer at the INCH convention).

They may be able to force the issue if you want services from the public schools. I know I was told to register when I was looking into speech therapy for my daughter. I sent after the forms, but never registered. I ended up working with my kids at home. I do know another homeschool mom who did register.

Again, verify with HSLD.

Thanks for the clarification Ikselby! So sorry to speak incorrectly about this issue. My information came from an HSLDA document I have that says "There are no requirements to notify, seek approval, test, file forms, or have any certain teacher qualifications." My assumption is that it applied in all cases but I can see that there might be some differences in the case of special services.

I had two sons go through speech. These are the steps we took.
Called school district requesting speech evaluation.
Had evaluation with speech therapist at our closest elementary school.
Both boys were determined to need speech therapy.
Therapist filled out an IEP (individual education plan) for their speech therapy.
We did fill out a simple form that stated we homeschooled. It asked simple questions, like what classes do they take, which I filled in "math, history, science, etc." Number of hours in school per week. There were a couple other questions, but not terribly involved. Simple one words answers. The sheet itself was only half a page. I did sign consent forms for speech. All these forms went to the state so the school district could be reimbursed for my boys' "speech therapy."   Once a year we would need to refill forms, if we were continuing speech.
Once we stopped, we did get one more form from the state, but I never sent it in, and I haven't heard a thing for over two years.

Aside from this, we have never had to fill out a thing to hs in MI.

In Christ,
Stacy in MI

This does not help you in Michigan, but here in Indiana, I told them my son is homeschooled, the speech therapist can easily verify his academic skills anyway - and they see him just fine. No registration or notification.

BUT they did do something different - they do service plans for homeschool kids, rather than IEPs. I wonder if there is a difference because of the use of the IEP, which has federal laws attached to it.

Regarding Michigan, I did homeschool my sister there several years ago; she was receiving special services from the school district, but she had also received those same services when she was attending. My mother notified them of our homeschool intent (just verbally), she continued services with no additional paperwork. That could also be because the IEP had not yet expired? I'm not sure.

We're praying for you! I understand the "off the grid" feeling! If it weren't for the fact that I cannot help my son with some of the worst parts of his speech, they wouldn't even know we existed either!

Ok, sorry to not update on this earlier. Thank you for all of your responses - it is so nice to have this community!

Well, I got all of the paperwork in my hands and did not sign off on it. Basically, in MI, you can be a HSer who does not have to register with the state, or a HSer who operates under the title of a "non-public school". With the latter, you have to register and can be questioned about your certification as a teacher. Also, when you register, your name and address get sent to the local Superintendant every year on a list of other HSers. The creepy thing was that the paperwork that would have me sign to register as a HSer did not mention this at all - so basically when you sign it, you are signing that you are operating as a "non-public school", without realizing it.

I showed the forms to my husband (a public school teacher!    ) and he said, "absolutely not. don't sign that."

Just wanted to share that in case anyone is presented with this situation.

Oh, and by the way, I ended up ordering http://www.amazon.com/Help-Me-Talk-Right-Lessons/dp/09635426 13/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1302043437&sr=1-1 this instead.

Peace!

Thanks for the update. I am so glad I didn't follow the school's request and register.
