Hi!
Come on in. Amy, I know you've been waiting at the door . We're still setting up. I feel like when I'm trying to get the room ready for a party or support group meeting. Still moving around the chairs and getting stuff out of the oven...
Anyone bring anything to share? I've got to get my cookies...be back soon.

I'm here! Still too surrounded by boxes to make any treats, but I have my warmed-over cup of coffee and I'm ready to chat!

I'll put my oven mitts on and help you get the cookies out of the oven.

Are you going to be able to take advantage of the great New Mexico Christmas traditions or will you be unpacking all week? You are so blessed to be down there to experience that. I have many very fond memories of Christmas in Santa Fe.

I'm here. I have not made a single cookie or anything else edible for Christmas this year. I am scouting out some good recipes on this retreat.
Bamboozle me with your cookies!

Not sure. Right now we are snowed in with 18 inches of white fluff. I'm not going anywhere!
We do hope to get to the basilica for Christmas Eve mass, though.

Hello everyone! Not here for long, but glad to be joining in. I wonder if anyone has a great eggnog recipe. I cannot find it in the stores over here and perhaps what I need is a good recipe.

18 inches! - that is a lot for that region. It seems everyone around us is getting hit with the white stuff and it is totally bypassing us and feeling very autunm-like - though this is very discouraging for my dd who really wants snow.
OK - my favorite cookie and one that is always popular at Cookie exchanges is the Chocolate Crinkle - an old stand-by from childhood.
1/2 cup vegetable oil or shortening
1 2/3 cup sugar
2 oz unsweetened baking chocolate, melted, cooled
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs
2 cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup milk
powdered sugar
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Beat in eggs then chocolate. Sift dry ingredients, blend in alternately with milk. Chill 2 hours. Roll 1 inch balls in powdered sugar. Place on greased cookie sheet. Bake 15 minutes. Makes 4 dozen.

LOVE eggnogg!
(But I just buy it at the store, so sorry, no recipe.)

What! Not a fan? I would love a good egg nog right now!
I haven't had it in years.

Hi, ladies. I'll be in and out as babies wake up from naps. I have my 1yo here with me here at the kitchen table, playing with pieces of paper. We'll see how long that lasts. Baby is still sleeping.
We used to have eggnog every year at my grandparents' on Christmas Eve when I was a child. I haven't had it since.

So I did some recipe searching over the last couple days and now have added a bunch of new things to my goodies-to-bake list. Luckily, MIL asked us to bring desserts to the Christmas celebration, so they won't all be staying at my house.
So in an effort to narrow things down around here, just wondering: what is your very favorite cookie/treat to bake at Christmastime...the recipe you just could not have Christmas without making?

In addition to having a delightful cookie exchange and random chat, I thought it could be fun to do a little Daybook posting (similar to Peggy's Simple Woman's Daybook)...to get to know you. And, I'd especially encourage our lurkers...and newer members to post!! I'd love to hear from you...yes...you...you're reading on your screen right now...you never post...well, now's your chance! Come out of lurkdom and share!
I have my cup of tea next to me...
A 4Real gal's daybook
I am wearing...a denim skirt with a heathered gray sweater over a white knit shirt - heather gray cotton tights and my favorite Danskos. My hair is up in a clip because after a windy morning out getting new tires, a clip is a distinct relief!
I am drinking...Harney & Sons Hot Cinnamon Spice Tea. It's my special tea and I save it for special times...like fun retreats in front of warm fires!!!
Outside my window...it is super cold! The wind is biting cold. We even had snow earlier this week (a rarity here in the south)! This is always a particular treat! I have to tell you though, I love the winter. Winter time brings families closer...fires are blazing...hot chocolate shared...books read while snuggled together. It's one of my favorite seasons!
A favorite thread...I've been enjoying so many conversations lately!!! I pulled my top 3 favorite threads out of my Favorites:
Compulsion and Excellence
Living the Slow Life
pretty little ways
I learned so much and took so much joy from each of these threads.
A retreat visitor I wish would drop in is...Meredith!! Where are you Sweetness and Light?!
If I weren't on this "retreat" I should be...swishing laundry and writing menus for next week! There's always tomorrow though, right?!
I am hoping...my dh's Christmas gift makes it here before Christmas!!! AHHHHH!!!!
YOUR TURN!!!!!!!

Hi Celeste!
If you would ask my dd14, she would say "Buckeyes"!
I would say "Gingerbread cookies".

Me too! We buy it at the store, too. I think my dad and I are the only ones that drink it!

Mary, those chocolate crinkles look delicious! I haven't had those in ages. My mother used to make them, but stopped at some point and I'd forgotten all about them. I'll have to give your recipe a try! Oh, this is NOT the time of year to be on a low-carb diet!

Well my teens just informed me that they hate eggnog! So I guess that my dh and I are the only ones who would be drinking it.
