Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was perusing some "mom-twaddle" in the Target check out line when I saw a small blurb-a new movie is being made ("Miss Potter") starring Renee Zellweger. Anyone here anything about it?

Suz, I had been hoping to see it this weekend, but around here it is only open in two theaters! One is in the city (and I don't want to drive in) and the other is even further away! I am hoping it gets released more widely soon.

I would love to hear how it is if anyone has seen it. People magazine gave it an "iffy" review (not that I ever agree with that woman anyway ).

It's playing at a theater close by and a group of us were going to see it today. Alas, we got our lovely Texas ice storm and even though it's quickly melting it look like a day for puzzles, reading and hot chocolate instead.
I'll be sure to give a "review" when we see it.

Has anyone has seen it yet? thoughts?

DH and I have a date-night tomorrow, and it's playing close by. I would go in an instant...but how do you sell a Beatrix Potter movie to a guy who likes westerns and spy films? I'm thinking it's highly likely I will get one of these:

If he's not game, I may do something crazy and go by myself tonight at 9:30. But, then i would probably fall asleep during tomorrow's movie

And, 2 movies in 2 days for someone who usually only goes to 2 movies in a YEAR!!!

I've been watching the movie listings. I want to see it but it isn't playing nearby.

Perhaps I'll save my money and buy it when it comes out.

I saw it and it was brilliant. I don't want to give anything away, but the illustrations are portrayed so personally, it's fun! Many scenes of Miss Potter's childhood are right out of the books! Imagine her narrating The Tale of Two Bad Mice as she is playing with her dollhouse.

Her adult years are just as delightful, and though there is tragedy in her life, it is handled very well. She does argue with her parents , but the arguments have to do with class distinctions and marriage. These arguments are more enlightening than problematic, IMHO. And they are not fierce. Her relationship with her fiance are chaste to a point of a stolen kiss being hidden by a puff of locomotive smoke ...charming, from begining to end.

The scenery is amazing, from the recreation of Victorian London, to the Lake District.

The only thing I can complain about is that it was too short! I would have loved to see more of her later life in the Lake District, the sheep she raised and judged, the property she bought...but it is otherwise one of the best films I have seen in a long time. Take the whole family!

Amie-
Here is the movie website with a trailer, but it doesn't seem like it is playing anywhere near us in Kansas City, yet.

It would've been a fun mom's night out, huh?

God Bless,

It's not playing widely at all. In fact, it's only in one theatre in NYC: Lincoln Center.

Oh yeah, that would have been fun! It is really frustrating that we can get tons of other movies of such yucky topics and no Miss Potter. Well we did get the Therese Movie, perhaps we'll get this one too. We'll have to keep our eyes out!

Good to see you on the boards! Though I'd love to see you IRL more often!

Here is Focus on the Family's Plugged In review. They give it rave reviews just like MacBeth. Thanks MacBeth for sharing! We can't wait to see it!

I need to check to see if it's playing anywhere around here (south central PA). If it is, I think I can convince an IRL friend to go with me. I don't think my dh will mind

Saw it with 2 friends of mine. We all liked it. It's a wonderful movie! And, MacBeth was right...."take the whole family".....my dh would have enjoyed it. Heard all kinds of comments after the movie while walking out that everyone wished it was longer    It was charming and beatiful! I loved her drawings coming to life. And, seeing her books in the stores gave me chills....to think that we STILL see those same characters! Witnessing her at the printers and watching her draw and think up stories as a young girl...some of my favorite scenes.

It's still only in 2 theatres in Seattle, so it may not ever be playing widely. Definitely worth owning/renting if you can't see it in the theatres.

BTW..almost EVERYONE in the theatre was over the age of 60!

Thanks for the review, Suzanne. I'm so anxious to see it. I've been meaning to pull out our Beatrix Potter notebook from last year to review.

Still not playing in our area. I'm thinking I might as well use my money to buy it when it comes out (especially after reading your review and MacBeth's ) rather than spend the money at the cinema.

I'm bumping this up because I really can't believe this movie didn't get more notice when it was in the theatres. It's absolutely my new favorite movie!
