Hi I am looking for some input into placing our son in a martial arts group. There are so many different ones and I know nothing about any of them. But it has been suggested that it would help our almost 7 year old son use up some energy, learn some self control and have a chance to make new friends. Has anyone got any experience of which might work for us?

I had several kiddos in tae kwon do. Two of them actually earned their black belts. They liked it a lot. We don't do it any longer because they wanted to go on to other activities.

I have heard tae kwon do uses a lot of kicking, more than the other martial arts.

My son does Karate. He loves it and it has been wonderful for him.
I think more important than the style of martial art is that you find a dojo where the attitude is one that appeals to you. Look for one where the sensei is kind, patient, approachable, serious about his craft, but fun-loving as well. The sensei is so important.
Look at the kids in the class and see if they are having fun and learning. Is adequate discipline maintained so that the kids are not always goofing off, without it being overly stern and serious? Are parents welcome to observe at all times?
I advise spending some time observing classes, and doing a trial class or two before committing to a particular dojo.
