Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have a friend who is thinking about a move to Southern Idaho. Does anyone here have any information I can share with her?
Thank you so much!

I don't have lots of information but my DH is from Idaho and his family still lives there. We visit often. We are military so it is still considered our "home."   Cost of living is good. Politics are fairly conservative. Pretty scenery. Lots of space. Great skiing.   Southern Idaho is not as Catholic as northern Idaho. Lots of Mormons. Boise is a nice sized city and is pretty safe. Outside of Boise, rare (if any) Catholic schools and probably hard to find groups of Catholic homeschoolers. No Catholic college options.   My DH's parish is fairly liberal and there are not too many children at Mass. Not much going on as far as Catholic community in his town. My husband had never heard/been exposed to many of the Catholic practices and traditions until he moved East.

I am sure someone who actually lives there might have more thoughts!
DH retires in two years and maybe I am coming up with my own reasons for not wanting to move back there!

Juliana,

Would this be southwestern or southeastern Idaho? - two pretty different geographical areas so different info. And are looking for homeschool information or general information?

I don’t currently live in Idaho and I’ve never homeschooled there, but I did grow up in southeastern Idaho (and my mom is from southwestern Idaho and lives in that area currently - though over the border in Oregon). KauaiCatholic grew up in Idaho, too. Meredith lived there for quite a few years and homeschooled there though they have now moved. Don’t know if she is checking in right now. There is a newer member who I have noticed because of the username (IdahoDebra) that might be able to jump in to the conversation as well. Otherwise not many members with Idaho connections.

Crusermom gave you a pretty good basic overview. Seems like we are all “from” there. So if I had a better idea of hte information you were seeking I could add what I know.

I have lived in northern Idaho all of my life. Sadly, I know pretty much nothing about southern Idaho. It is almost like a different state "down there." If she has any questions about northern Idaho, I'm happy to help out, though :)

I'm chiming in late ... is your friend still looking for info? at any rate, I agree with everything said so far; Crusermom offered an extremely astute overview for someone who only visits and Idahodebra is right about the great divide between north and south. and while I personally prefer the upper half, I have to admit that SW ID was a great place to grow up (although I didn't fully appreciate that until I left, of course). I can also report that we had very good positive Catholic experiences there; some of the Boise-area churches are really alive and the youth program awesome. the whole state is safe and rural (maybe a little too much so for my taste at times, IYKWIM) but it really is a beautiful place, and nicely off the beaten path, if those are attributes that appeal. even as much as Boise has grown since I lived there, it still feels more like a big town than an actual city. with 2 sets of aging parents there (mine in Emmett, DH's in Nampa) we very well may end up there again someday, and I think we're at peace with that.

dunno if that helps any, but prayers for your friend's discernment.

MaryM., I'm impressed by your memory! I always admire your comments and wisdom but hadn't realized we share geographic roots!

IdahoDebra: whereabout are you in North ID? I lived in Moscow for 7 years and still miss the Palouse. although I like Kauai's winters better ...

An Idaho girl doesn't forget another Idaho girl, since there are so few of us...
