Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I was talking to some of the other moms in my homeschool group and we decided that our local, VERY protestant homeschool convention just isn't meeting our needs. We are playing with the idea of hosting our own Catholic conference but we have no idea where to start. We think we have a location that would work but that is it. Does anyone have any help they could share?

Well, first I think I'd try to find as many people in your area willing to HELP. What region are you in? You may be surprised at the folks within driving distance for a one-day conference...

How exciting. I've been the chairman for 3 conferences here in our state. A conference doesn't have to be big. Just start small and grow as you have the interest and support to do so. A facility is a great place to start - getting a date and location are the first steps. Then looking into speakers. As you don't know your attendance and such, it's best to try to keep costs low to start. Using local speakers can be good for that. Or go with one more known name, but figure out how many people would need to attend at a specific registration fee to cover those costs. Knowing the genearl location where you are, I could also help you with potential speaker ideas.

If you are interested there is a Yahoo group for Catholic homeschool conference planners. It's pretty quiet right now, as the busy conference planning time is over, but there are lots of great posts in the archives and of course questions are always welcome. If you are interested PM me with your email and I'll send you an invitation to the group.

I've only planned one in the past. We do have Catholic conferences, but they weren't meeting the needs of a CM/living style. So we had vendors that could fill these needs (Bethlehem books was one).

Like JoAnna mentioned, we did have many drive to VA for this conference, people driving from OH, PA, MD, NC, NJ, and DE.

And you can do it! Just get some key people who are great organizers and financial planners...

Thanks for all the responses! MaryM, I sent you a PM; I'd love an invite to the Yahoo group.

Our group is based out of Evansville, Indiana. Are there any speakers close to this area?

I'd love any other ideas people have!

You probably want a more well-known speaker as your headline, but don't forget to tap some local people in your group who might have some talents in certain areas, like special needs children, hands-on science, nature study, math, liturgical year, Montessori in the home, or perhaps good at incorporating "living learning" or CM approach with picture books and living books, how to make your own Catholic curriculum.

Those were some of the ideas we batted around and used when we did our conference.
