Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Hi there!

Our dd(8) made her First Communion this week! Everything went beautifully!!

I wasn't present during the opening of the gifts.

And it was towards the end of the night, when my dear MIL showed me a gift (oohing and ahhing all the while) that was given to my daugher by a relative ~just so you know, this relative and my MIL are like-minded.

It was a silver cross pendant.

Surprised I asked, "Where is Jesus? Did He fall off?"

Confession: I didn't say that!

But I SO.MUCH.WANTED TOO!

To keep the peace, I replied, "Stunning!"

I just the fact that we as Roman Catholics have Crucifixes!

The cross, to me, looks protestant (no offense anyone, just my opinion).

I surprised one of your children didn't say something like that. I wouldn't put it past mine. (some have NO filter!)

I guess I'm ignorant on this, but while I love crucifixes, I don't see anything wrong with wearing a plain cross either.   The cross is symbolic, to me, of Jesus' love for us whether He's pictured on it or not.

On the flip side, I just hate it when my protestant husband says, "Why is He on the cross? Didn't He rise from the dead? Isn't He alive?" I've explained it to him a million times, and yet he always says the same thing with a smirk on his face...

They are missing so, so much...

No, nothing wrong... but a lot of protestants wouldn't even consider wearing a crucifix, and it's such a great gift to have a visual reminder of the pain He bore in His flesh... just to glance at it increases love and devotion in a way the plain cross doesn't.

There are so many different kinds of decorative crosses used in older Catholic church architecture, isn't there? I'm thinking of elaborate carvings and such which incorporate many different crosses inluding Celtic, etc... Or, take for instance, the Medieval crosses like those one sees on shields and such from the Crusades.

So, I think that the Catholic church has always used a variety of crosses as symbols. However, a good crucifix is a perfectly distinctive Catholic expression of our faith! It can feel like plain crosses are "Protestant," but while I love the crucifix, I hope not to allow "them" to steal our enjoyment of the the beautiful variety of symbols of the cross that our faith gives us.

But, I still think your initial reaction was very funny
