Can I ask why, Nancy? or, can we talk about it here?
I have a dd interested in this (daughter of someone who could care less as long as it is modest and neat and clean  )
It would not be what I want to encourage.......but, I do not want to squish the passion, completely, if you know what I mean.

Actually, I've been asked to write about this topic. (I'm a freelance writer in my spare time, when I am not at the spa or eating bon bons, LOL!) It's a nice assignment and I want to do it justice.
(My idea of fashion is clean jeans and a T- or sweatshirt. Ironic?)
I'm hoping to find people who've pursued this career to see what suggestions they can offer aspiring designers and merchandisers. It's a very competitive career field.
One of the positive aspects I've found so far is that aspiring designers are really encouraged to work in the field (as paid retail salespeople, unpaid interns, receptionists, whatever) to get a feel for the business before committing to this career path. Apparently there are many paths open that can lead to the coveted designer position. Hard work and perseverance are keys to success, as well. All this means that the things you'd have to do anyway to get a foot in the door will tell you way ahead of time if this field is a good fit for you.
So, if your dd is really interested, working in retail sales or as a "gopher" somewhere would be a positive step - and would amply illustrate the biggest drawbacks of the field. (Sad to say, hours are long and irregular, pay is very low for entry-level positions and there's a lot of competition for jobs.)
The current trend is more toward freelancing, though, which could fit more effectively with a part-time career plan or with parenting.
Chari, I think there's a market for fun-yet-modest fashions for tweens...not that I'm hinting or anything...

oh there was a story a while back about a girl wanting modest clothes.. isn't there a website for girls for modest stylish clothing that was started by a teen? rather than going through the Fashion World..
I hate it when I only can remember tiny snippets and they may not even be able the same person.

Jodie, this sounds familiar.
My writing assignment is about the traditional path to fashion careers (paid work, fashion school, internships), but it is always helpful to know about people who forged their own paths. Sometimes, in the creative/arts career fields, it's a matter of being in the right place at the right time and then putting in tons of effort...

My dirty little secret.
YEARS ago, I was accepted into the Fashion Merchandising program at UW-Stout. At the time, it was the best 4 year program out there. I had three years of experience working part-time at a retail store. I'd even been promoted to work with the buyer for my department. Heady stuff for a kid still in high school. My mom was an Interior Designer for a huge retailer, and I helped them with their window displays. That's what I really wanted to do -- design windows.
Reality set in, life happened, and I never attended Stout.
BUT, working in a retail store got my foot in the door. I met many people within the industry, and received many recommendations from those same people. It was a great experience.
