Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

The current thread about seashore visits (and lighthouses) reminded me of a topic I wanted to start but didn't get around to last summer. In the last couple of years I have become aware of some out of the ordinary places to stay - these would be accommodations that are quite different from the usual hotel/motel, cabin, or camping experiences.

We have talked here some in the past about monasteries sometimes having guest accomodations for travelers. Does anyone have a good website or book for finding those locations?

I've also stumbled on these fun options for accommodations. I would love to stay at a lighthouse. It seems that turning them into vacation destination accomodations has been a major way to keep them funded and preserve them. Here are a couple sites with info:

Or stay over night in a giant treehouse - reminds me of Swiss Family Robinson.

A camping alternative is to rent a Fire Lookout Tower. Having history of wildland firefighting in the family and having visited fire lookouts as a kid, this is an option I have wanted to do the past few years. We just haven't managed to find a vacancy when we've been in the NW. I wish there was an option here in CO to stay in an old fire lookout.

So do you know of an unusual type places to stay when traveling? Would love to hear what else is out there.

Wow Mary. I just killed almost an hour looking at all those links!!! Those treehouses look SO fun!

We stayed at a place called Kinderfarm earlier this year. It's on the Olympic Peninsula here in WA, and although it's not as out-of-the-ordinary as those treehouses are, it was a pretty neat experience! Our suite had a full kitchen, a couple of bedrooms and even a toy room. The kids helped the farm owners feed their livestock each day-- it was great!
