We found our first-ever letterbox yesterday. Dd is hard at work creating rubber stamps for us to use in the logbooks. It looks like we've discovered a fun hobby.
Dd also wants to try geocaching, but I'm so technologically impaired that I'm worried we'll walk off a cliff or something like that. Does anyone have any tips for newbies?

Oh, letteringboxing - we enjoy this a lot. A few years ago we were really active. Not so much recently.
Past threads, with some informational links:
Letterboxing
letter boxing
I'll post again when I have more time. Letterboxing can be a great geography and history activity. We have enjoyed learning interesting facts about areas as we have travelled. We have also benefited from hiding letterboxes ourselves for others to find - picking locations that we can teach people about.
- Welcome to the club!

Yes, watch where you're walking

We geocache. My husband handles the technical aspects of it since I prefer my walks and hikes to be uncomplicated. Here is a site that might give you some ideas on getting started.

It's a lot of fun. A friend has taken us out. Sometimes it can be frustrating, but kids really enjoy it. Treasure hunting at it's best. When we first went, my oldest daughter after finding the first cache asked, "Where's the cash?"

Ok I was being a bit silly.. though it's a good idea to remember to watch where you're going and not just watch the electronics.
But dh reminded me that some people do trust the electronics more than their own eyes.. as in people "lost" this winter, in snow.. because their GPS said that this road went through and they didn't consider that the road in question was unplowed and covered with snow, usually a good clue that it's NOT used in the winter. And their excuse when hauled out was.. the GPS said it went through.

A few years ago, we had a homeschooling letterboxing group here. We made a letterbox at the Conowingo Dam, but it disappeared after bad weather. I think it went sailing on the Susquehanna.
It is an interesting thing to do and it gets you outside! I am glad I saw this thread, it has renewed my interest.
