I would like to get a commemorative coin for my son for the Boy Scout Centennial.
The US Mint has made some silver dollars and they are selling for $39.99 for a proof and $33.99 for an uncirculated coin.
This seems like way too much money for a coin! Is this a typical cost for a coin of this type?

I asked dh and he seemed to think that that was a fair price for a commemorative coin.
He mentioned that a 1oz silver coin (nothing special) would be going for about $20 right now.

Congrats on your son's earning the rank of Eagle! My ds is an Eagle as well - and loves the Boy Scout commemorative stuff. He tried to get the fifty-pence that England minted when he went to World Jamboree, but they were very difficult to come by. I know he'll love this new coin; I just wish it weren't so expensive.
Also, instead of a high school ring, my ds got an Eagle ring which he wears proudly.

Diana, what a great idea!!!
My son isn't the jewelry type, but I will ask him about the ring. It would be a lovely gift...
He IS thrilled to have earned his Eagle this year because he gets a special BSA centennial Eagle patch - only 2010 Eagles will get them. (It takes the sting out of being too old for the Centennial Jamboree...)

argh. my 11-yo has been badgering me about getting this.
and 13-yo wants the 100-year tie to wear at confirmation. i haven't said yes yet. $30 for a tie????

Yes, I've only seen a few scout things on ebay, but they were very, very pricey.
Guitarnan, my son was also presented with a US flag that had been flown over the US Capitol (our troop requests these for the Eagles from our state senator). My ds loves this, and has taken it with him on his travels and asks to have it flown. So far, a couple of places he has had it flown is in England at the World Jambo and he has had it flown at his college. You may want to see if your troop does this, if not you could request one through your senator.

I will have to make a list of things to do and people to contact, I think.
Stef, I know Scout stuff is pricey. We have been frugal over the years, but I will tell you that my son prizes a couple of his Scout items above all his other possessions, particularly some of the neckerchiefs he traded for at an international jamborette. (I can't believe I sent him three countries away when he was 11!) A Scout tie can last a lifetime. (He can wear it to his own son's Courts of Honor...)
I'm not trying to spend your money for you, though!

Oh no, I understand 
He's actually offering to pay for it himself if we won't get it for him. I think we will though, he's been an exemplary scout and was just voted to be ASPL recently. He's hoping to get to Eagle by next year -- we'll see. If only I could get him to write more!! I'm trying to hold out on buying more scout things until he makes good on his promise to work on a couple of essays. 
So good to see Scout moms on here! Scouting has really grown on me and 11-yo will be lucky since part of his curriculum this coming year will be merit-badge-based.

oh this is fun..
I don't know that we'd do the coins.. that is rather pricey.
But my older boy moves from Webelos to Boy Scouts next month.. and I really would like to get him the Centennial cap to wear.. maybe the belt buckle.. things that won't break the bank and he can actually USE.
But I found this AWESOME deal on an internal frame backpack that adjusts down to fit him now, and adjust up to fit someone right about 6ft. And there's enough short men in my family (including my dh) that it should work for this boy until he wears it out.

I just asked him that!
Of course, he wants both for himself. (He LOVES coins. I have no concept of why they are so attractive to him. But he lets me collect other odd items, cookbooks, mostly, so...)
He told me to get the uncirculated coin for our son. I think it is because it's closer to what a coin meant for circulation looks like. Proof coins are double-struck and so the relief images stand out much more clearly than they do on uncirc coins.
It's personal preference, though.
Looks like they are taking orders now and shipping in April.
If you have more questions I can call him tomorrow and ask him!

Nancy, I think that I already congratulated you on your son's Eagle. I know how hard it is. We are almost there ourselves.
Stef, it's great that your son is ASPL. It is such a great learning experience for the boys.
Is all of this in the scout catalog? I better go and check it out...

Carole, the coins are sold by the U.S. Mint. Ours have arrived but I have not opened the boxes - no time!
