I took my oldest boy to a Boy Scout meeting tonight.. he's 2nd year Webelos and will be crossing into Boy Scouts in April.. so this was a "visit". And they did some fun things with the boys.. they taught the boys how to tie square knots and bowlines.. and then they played a game where each boy tied a rope to each leg with a bowline and then tied the ropes together with square knots.. then they have to march in a line (since they were tied foot to foot) up to a point and turn around and come back
Then they split the whole group into 3 teams.. blindfolded one member.. and two balls were hidden in the room.. and each team had to direct the blindfolded member to find the balls. things like the boy missing the ball by an inch and moving away from it.. the younger boys tended to turn the wrong direction when told to turn right or left.. oh goodness.. it was definately a have to be there to know just how funny it was .. though I have to say one of the older boys was sooo good with the younger boys.. lots of them would tell a boy that turned right when he should have turned left.. "no not that way.. turn LEFT".. which of course only confuses the boy because he thought he did.. and this one particular boy would simply say "turn to your other left" but the younger boys would immediately be able to correct their direction with that..
So fun to watch.. a really good group of boys.

It's so great to see the older Scouts really taking an interest in the younger ones!

Oh, that's fun! My younger son had his Blue and Gold Banquet last night, with lots of corny skits. He's a Tiger, and my older son is Tenderfoot rank. Our troop/pack started just this year and are really small, but I've been impressed with the same thing: many of the Boy Scouts also go to the Cub meetings to help out and are wonderful with the little boys.
Part of the fun last night was a dessert competition. One dad friend of ours with his son made this AMAZING -- and I mean, really amazing -- sheet cake decorated to look like a lake with a mountain, a hiking trail, a campfire, a bridge, dock, boys in the water, pine trees, rocks, all in edible 3-D. I forgot my camera, but maybe someone will email me a picture of it. I told the dad he'd have to host a Dude Cake-Decorating workshop.
Love those Scouts . . .
Sally

At my son's final Blue and Gold banquet, the father-son cake decorating contest and auction (to raise money for the pack) was hilarious. One team made a replica of the USS LaSalle (the ship at our base) and the ship's captain bought it for over $200.
And the corny skits don't go away - Boy Scouts do them, too. Very funny!

I'll e-mail this to dh and boys, who's scoutmaster of a troop here. That sounds like a fun game to do!
Our Webelos II had his Blue and Gold Banquet and Crossover last Thursday, went to his first Scout ski day at Perfect North Sunday and his first Troop meeting on Monday. Whew!
Scouting has really grown on me, esp. seeing how good it's been for my boys and their relationship with Dad too. And I really like their Religious Emblem programs.

Wednesday is scout/explorer day for our family. My ds (17) spends the early evening with the beavers (who are 6/7) helping out the leaders. He really enjoys this activity a lot. Then he spends the evening with the explorers which is the older scouts (almost like a venture group at home). I am thankful that we have an active group for him to participate in!
And I really love scouting. It has been a wonderful adventure for our family.
