Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Let's look at our first and middle names.....they often tell a story.....maybe the name choice....maybe the spelling...

....and, if you do not use a REAL name here....tell why you chose your specific username.

I will start.....

"Chari Lynne"

I was named after my great-grandmother Charlotte, who died a year before I was born. My dad loved her.

This is what I tell people:

"Take 'Charlotte'.....drop the 'lotte'.......add an 'i' .......and then change the pronunciation."

It is pronounced similar to "Shari"

(How mnay of you thought I was ChARi like the 'ar' in car??? )

I never could figure out how my name was phonetically correct till I took a WRITING ROAD TO READING week long course.....and found my name DOES follow rules. yay!

My middle name is from my dad's first cousin, Lynn. She was a twin of Leslie.....and my youngest sister got Leslie for a middle name.

How about you?

Let's see how many of the 1,722 members can get here to post......that's a lot of names!

Be back with my story later.

Yep, I've been thinking ah as in car all this time!

I am Lindsay Marie, Lindsay was the middle name of my Dad's dad (and my grandfather's grandfather), which is why I use the masculine spelling (though, of course, these days, no one really bothers about that). And Marie was my dad's mom.

you lost me. i would say Shari with the ar the same way as in car.

so is it like cherry with a "sh" instead of a "ch"?

i was almost Victoria. but my dad didn't like that. my mom knew a Laura growing up and really liked her. so.

middle name Jean....cuz my mom's middle name is Jean....cuz her mom's first name was Jean (well, it was when my mom was born. it had originally be Regina but my grandmother had it legally changed to Jean.)

I'm named Emily after my paternal grandmother as I'm the oldest girl (dutch tradition)   My parents thought it would be a nice old fashioned name and then found out it had come back into popularity :-)

My middle name comes from my mom's side of the family (my grandmother didn't have a middle name) but it's spelled differently because my dad wrote it down for the birth certificate (Katrina)

It was interesting when I lived with my paternal grandmother for a bit during my university years. Two women with the same name were rather confusing when it came to the phone and mail.

Yes, she's sherry as in the wine.

I think both my first and middle names were "just because my parents liked them".    The neat thing is - I'm adopted so had a foster family for 7 weeks before getting placed with my parents. The foster family named me Amy too, without knowing my parents' ideas. I love that my first/middle names mean "Beloved Christbearer." Let me tell you, that helps me though some bad times!

I'm Erin Marie. My first name is Erin because I was meant to be Aaron. For several generations on both sides of the family everyone had boys first so my parents thought they would also have a boy! Turns out I broke the trend.

Marie is after my mom, both grandmothers and a great-grandmother on each side.

My parents wanted an Italian name for me, since my father and all his family are from Italy, but my mom wanted a name that hadn't been used on his side yet (a mean feat, if you know big Italian families!). Celeste is what they decided on. My dad's side pronounces it the Italian way (che-LE-ste, with all short e's--roughly), but I pronounce it the usual Americanized way with everyone else.

And Marie is my mother's middle name.

I'm MaryAnne

My Mom wanted to name me Violet Annie after both Nana's. Mom's Mom was Violet and Dad's Mom was Annie.

My Dad wanted to name me Mary Ellen which was my Mom's name.

Mom's second choice was Beatrice Annie (her Aunt who sponsored her arrival in the US & Dad's Mom).

Dad's second choice - Bridget Mary (Dad's fave aunt & Mom)

They more or less compromised with Mary Anne but as neither of them was happy AT ALL with the compromise they called me Cissy. Sorta funny as in 1st grade I had trouble responding when Sister would call me MaryAnne. That's NOT my name!!! Low these many, many years later, Dad is gone 10 years and Mom 1 year and only my older brother will rarely affectionately refer to me as Cissy. The name which was soooo preeminent in my past is now just a distant whisper from the past....

Thank God I wasn't a boy as the intended names were either Augustine Patrick or Cyril Patrick. Even knowing the family connection, I'm not really thrilled with either...

   Much much happier with MaryAnne.

After all, what could be better than to be named after the Blessed Mother & St. Anne!

My dad gave me my name. He takes a really old Chinese character book and looks to see what would work and what ever moves him. It took him weeks to come up with my son's Korean name. My name means literally "thick mud" but the deeper meaning is strong, stubborn. Oh, and it's the combination of first and middle name that gives it this particular meaning.

I am named Bridget for St. Bridget of Ireland. My parents were new converts and my dad liked Bridget because there is a legend about her making vats of beer for the poor. Poor guy, I never made beer for him...

My sister's best friend at the time was Barbie Hill (they were 8), so she pushed for the name. My mom and dad liked it, and voila! I think my mom just liked the name Louise for some reason...I always felt a connection to my dad, though, because his middle name is Louis. Sometimes my parents friends would call us both "Bobbie Louie".

Although, my nickname growing up became "Boo" (it started out as "Boogie Bear" then morphed into "Boo Bear" and then just "Boo"). My godmother still calls me that on the rare occasions I see her, and my husband calls me that sometimes.

She was Helen Marie, mine is hers turned around with differenet variations of the names. My mom wanted to name me Sydney, my dad said my middle name would have to be Australia!
