I would like to update our Netflix queue for Lent and am looking for good whole family movies to watch during that time. We have already seen Therese, St. John Bosco and John Paul II. What else is appropriate, and hopefully entertaining, for the 2-14 crowd? Or at least the 6-14 crowd?
How about movies that aren't necessarily "religious" but would fit in well during a penitential season?

A few that come to mind from our personal collection are:
Miracle of Marcelino
Greyfriars Bobby
Darby O'Gill and the Little People for St. Patrick's Day
Jesus of Nazareth (I am not sure about age appropriateness, as we have not watched it for a long time)
Pollyanna

We have this one on video and it is beautiful.
I would think any of the saints movies would be great as would Tree of Wooden Clogs, Babette's Feast, Scarlet and the Black, Shoes of the Fisherman , ... or any of the myriad movies about sacrifice and pain all for the good of God's kingdom.

I love Jesus of Nazareth. So do all of my fam members. Any of the Italian subtitled new Ignatius press movies....pretty well done (if you watch the original acting in Italian!).

Thanks, Ladies! The kids did pretty well with the subtitles for St. John Bosco, so I think we could do some of the foreign ones.
We have Jesus of Nazareth on VHS and watch it in bits and pieces over Lent every year. Some others I thought of are Ben Hur, The Robe, and Quo Vadis.
And I LOVE Greyfriars' Bobby! I want to cry just thinking about it!

Hi Molly!
We love the Ignatius films with Stephen Ray:
Peter, Keeper of the Keys
Mary, Mother of God
etc.
I think Netflix has ten films from this collection. When you select one the others should pop up in recommendations.
We watched a really good film on Felicity and Perpetua. I think it was called St.Perpetua, Martyr for the faith?
Oops, I just read that you were looking for "good for Lent, but not necessarily religious." This is a harder question. I'll give it some thought.
I just watched Babett's Feast for the second time. I saw so much more the second time around! Great film!

Does your library offer interlibrary loans or can you request that they purchase some of the titles?
The Vatican's best films list from 1995 can be found here.
Also, I shared this list of movies on my blog in January. All of the movies are not necessarily for Lenten viewing, but they are ones that my husband and I have enjoyed (the children have seen and enjoyed those that are age appropriate).
