Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Oh Donna, no advise because we find ourselves in a similar situtation!

There is a very sweet elderly woman who takes daily walks with her three dogs. (The rottwieler is on a leash, walked by her friend/helper) However, her two little yappy dogs are allowed to walk off leash, doing their business in everyone's yard and mainly chasing my children....biting their ankles. (They have long pants on and since the dogs are so small no skin has been broken) She blames my children for running away instead of standing still. DH is soooo not happy, but is working during her walks.

Right now, we just make our kids come inside when we see them coming up the street. I really was having the momma bear come out, but her son died....and.....I just didn't want to hurt her more.

So I'd actually like to hear from other dog people - do you think it is poor manners for these dogs to be out running around? I know it is unlawful. What would be the best approach, in this situation? Grin and bear it for the sake of friendship? Ask for compensation for damages when things are destroyed? Call animal control?

As a dog lover but one currently without a dog since ours died, yes, it's VERY poor manners to allow dogs to be running around unsupervised. Dogs are dogs and they are not always predictable.

In regards to "for the sake of friendship", you have to ask yourself how much they value YOUR friendship if they continue to allow this to happen to YOUR family on YOUR property. I don't believe I would prob. ask for compensation unless you're talking substantial loss but I would (chicken that I am after not doing it 1st time) call anonymously to animal control. Once they have to pay impound fees to get the dog(s) out, they may be more inclined to keep them leashed or fenced. I did this once to a neighbor for her cat (after 2 other attempts to ask her to "control" her cat b/c it kept getting in my fenced backyard and pooping in my kids' sandbox! Her response was "it's a cat, they roam". We live in a typical suburban neighborhood so it's not a rural area and cats aren't allowed to roam.   Well, I did call animal control and they picked up her cat and boy was she MAD! She had the nerve to say *I* cost her $175 to get the cat out. I said, "No, you allowing your cat to roam the neighborhood cost you $175." Well, we weren't really friends, just neighbors, but I never saw that cat pooping in my kids' sandbox again! Never saw her again either since she lived one street over so that was fine but you just never know how people will react.

Good luck...I know it's a very tough situation.

Oh yuck. I've had some bad experiences with neighbor dogs and I have found the best way to deal with the situation is to buy a chain that you can hook to a tree. Everytime the dog is bothering you, chain him up. Leave him there until the neighbors come looking for him. I would give him water, food only if they didn't come for him after 24 hours. This way the dog won't reek havoc on your property and hopefully your neighbors will get sick of coming for him.

I've had dogs kill my ducks and chickens before and I have had to politely infer to some neighbors that their dog may get shot at night if I mistake it for a fox. (batter your eyes innocently...)
