OK, I've seen a bunch of posts on what to do with and for your children on St. Valentine's Day, but I'm stumped (after 18 years of being married) as to what to do for or give to my husband. He's so darned practical. And I don't want to give him anything, you know, too useful. Trouble is, I'm practical, too. I asked for a new vacuum cleaner (combining St. V, my birthday, and Mother's Day) since ours broke and it breaks my back to use it. He retorted, "Nothing with cords!" I'm going to make cookies and candies, but the whole family will share that.
So, what are YOU doing that's especially for your husbands? I'd really like to get some good ideas ...

Last Valentines Day we treated ourselves (the entire family) to a nice dinner at home. Surf and Turf. We decluttered the dining room and used the pretty plates and tablecloth. Cooked some filets and lobster, asparagus and potatoes. Bought some chocolate dessert. Put on some pretty music and enjoyed not being out with everyone else. We are looking forward to the same thing this year. I think we started a tradition.
Because we spend so much on the meal we just do nice cards for each other and it is so sweet.
As for something special just for him. I might just let him have the weekend to do whatever he wants. Even if it is watch football--again--and I won't complain.

OK, this is what we did last year and it was a big hit with my dh. I set up a small table in our bedroom with a white cloth, a single red carnation, a single red candle, and our good china and silver and crystal. I made a delicious but simple steak dinner, which we ate with the door locked! in our room. We had chocolate truffles for dessert. Then I gave him a massage and we had a wonderful evening together JUST THE TWO OF US! The older children watched the younger ones, and I had pizza for them to eat. Dh and I had a wonderful, relaxing evening, spent very little money (just for the steaks), and really have fond memories of that special night. The greatest gift is the gift of one's own time and attention...as St. Katherine Drexel says, "The total gift of self."

ok practical but frivolous.. how about a treat that he loves but rarely would buy for himself.. it's practical because it's consumable.
Like my dh gets See's Rocky Road Fudge at Christmas. But it doesn't have to be candy. A gourmet salsa and chips? a can of roasted cashews? whatever would be a treat.

If you are baking already, what about a special cookie that is just his batch? My dh has a couple of favourite cookie recipes, and I am thinking of buying a small bag of regular gluten-filled flour to bake some just for him.

A tradition I have had in years past is to make him a homemade card using any crafty materials I have sitting around (cardstock, stickers, scrapbooking paper etc)Inside I write a "love letter" to him, telling him in my own words (rather that Hallmark's)what I love about him. Simple, I know, but meaningful...
