...is it that the worst foods for you are the only ones that sound appealing in the first trimester???
I have so many aversions its not even funny. But its taking every bit of my wimpy will power to resist cookies, brownies and ice cream, which all sound yummy right now. And I have older kids who are more than willing to bake.
Someone pleeeaase talk me down from this? The urge to eat junk food is getting overwhelming. And I have 4 weeks till the end of the first trimester. I just cannot overgain this pregnancy. I'll be 40 when its all over and I am quite sure I will never get it off if I overindulge during pregnancy.

I know EXACTLY how you feel. For me, it was always McDonalds
I can do pretty well if I can find a healthy (and high protein/filling) alternative that simulates my craving. I'm not sure I don't over indulge, but then I can feel like I'm at least nourishing myself in the process.
For instance, if I crave pizza, I'll [make myself] make myself some cheese toast with a thick slab of cheddar on whole wheat.
Or if its ice cream, I'll get a big bowl of yogurt, maybe plain with maple syrup, bananas, and raisins.
Or if its cookies/cake I'll get a piece of toast (or three) and slather it with peanut butter and honey.
Sometimes, I'll even cook extra hamburgers to hide in the fridge just for me to have as a snack.
I do feel like all I do in the first and third trimester is prepare food for myself, but it does help curb the cravings for bad stuff.

First Trimester for me is just difficult. I can't much think of alternatives without making myself sick. But then I can usually eat most things if I don't have to think about cooking them.
but I made oatmeal cookies last night because I've been wanting them. But I only ate 3 and they weren't huge cookies. and oatmeal is good for you
Once I'm past the pregnancy sickness.. then I can focus better on eating decently.. but until then.. just thinking about foods.. like the alternatives Lindsay lists just thinking about making them would make my nausea much worse and

I do exactly what Lindsay does!! I try to find a comparable, healthy choice. But, yeah, it's hard...
Hope you get to feeling better soon.

I can eat my smoothie in the morning (whey protein, strawberries, whole milk, clo). I can eat greek yogurt. And scrambled eggs. I force myself to choke down a salad a day as well. My appetite is definitely reduced at the moment. I feel hungry, I eat a tiny bit of food and then I feel stuffed and gross again. Pretty much all meat sounds . Except if its hidden in a high carb mexican creation like enchiladas. And the cheese has to be super mild so it doesn't taste too much like sharp cheddar.
I hadn't thought about oatmeal cookies. At least that offers some nutrition. Anyone have a better-for-you than average oatmeal cookie recipe?
I can't get to the store for chocolate chips anyway. I'm snowed in at the moment. That's probably for the best.

Well for a good for you that isn't quite a cookie but avoids the cooked oatmeal texture.. My oatmeal bars are really good. I make them a lot in the summer because we can grab and go and they're wonderful for taking to lacrosse games and swim meets. They make a great breakfast with some yogurt too.
I usually double these and make them thicker in a slightly bigger pan.. and cool longer. Poking with your finger to see if it bounces back usually works. i prefer the second recipe.
Oatmeal Bars
1/4 c oil
3/4 c applesauce
1/2 c brown sugar
2 eggs
1 t vanilla
2 t cinnamon
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t baking pwd
1/2 t salt
1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
3 c. oats
1 c raisins (optional)
mix together and spread in a greased 9x11 cake pan. bake at 350 for 20 min.
or
1/4 c oil
3/4 c apple sauce
1/2 c honey
1 t vanilla
2 t cinnamon
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t baking pwd
1/2 t salt
1 1/2 c. whole wheat flour
3 c. oats
1 c raisins (optional)
mix together and spread in a greased 9x11 cake pan. bake at 350 for 20 min
*you can substitute other pureed fruit for the applesauce and add other dried fruits or chocolate chips or nuts etc. One of my favorites is to use cranberry sauce instead of apple sauce and add dried cranberries and walnuts.

Is the only difference the eggs and then either honey or brown sugar? And do you think I could substitute natural peanut butter for the oil?
I am sheepishly thinking if I used pb instead of oil that would up the protein and add the pb flavor, and the I could toss in a few chocolate chips so that maybe I can fool myself into thinking I'm eating a cookie!
Sounds like it might taste good with a scratch hot cocoa made with stevia tonight...

I FEEL for you...and just reading what you wrote makes my mouth water. I am close to week 14 and the nausea is abating but still around when I want to get things done
I too am trying not to overgain...I have slacked off on my walks and it shows and I FEEL it but the weather has been too bad to do it so I need to look into a DVD of something to keep limber and my metabolism up.
I have a smoothie with frozen berries and a frozen ripe banana and it tastes wonderful...and I will eat it, even if I am shivering through the whole darn thing because I love the treat!
I too will be 40..next month. My midwife told me I am definitely not OLD and she will write that on my chart! Yeah, I pay her to write that After all her daughter needs to go to college somehow
I find if I keep up the protein and drink plenty of liquids (still can't take water straight but I throw in some lime or a splash of raw apple cider vinegar for health..etc) I do have less cravings. I also pay attention to my taste buds. Starchy sugary things make a bad taste in my mouth while pregnant. I need to pay attention to that otherwise I will ignore it and eat it anyway
Sometimes I crave potato chips (we are not regular consumers of that) I fixed that one with baked potato slices with sea salt and sour cream. I figure I am craving the salt so I make it healthier by adding the mineral-rich version to some potato-ey food and craving quelled!
Aw...Now I wish we had gone to the food store before this snow hit....

they're great with a hot drink. And yes, I orginally came up with the recipe with the egg, but then for a friend I modified it to be vegan (honey was ok) and I liked it better that way.
And yes I have used peanut butter in it.. but don't put peanuts in it too.. too salty
And it really tastes good.. there's not a lot of fooling yourself needed. Every one of my kids will devour it.. and with chocolate chips there's nothing left over. it might be a bit more cake-like in texture than cookie texture.. but it will taste like a treat while managing to stay fairly good for you.
My motivation was to get something that tasted good.. and avoided the cooked oatmeal texture.. without being near as sugary as cookies.

I can SOOOOOOOOOOO relate!!!! I am repulsed by our good wheat bread when pregnant. REPULSED! Suddenly, it seems like everything repulses me, and I'm so nutrition bankrupt by the time I can eat again it's easy to rationalize that anything solid going in the mouth is better than continuing to be fed through the IV, right?
sigh.
Ok...enough of the pity party...and saying that we LOVE Jodie's oatmeal bars here! I love adding coconut (little sweetness) and dates which are so nice. And...I am not above adding some white chocolate chips to them either!!! I was thinking the other day that these would be good if we got a really nice bar of dark chocolate and just shaved a bit of the chocolate onto the top of the bars! How great would that be? Chocolate...in moderation...but still just enough for a hint of sweet and a big visual feast for the eyes right on top!

Yeah, this is me, too. Its totally not weather appropriate, but it tastes amazing.

Totally off topic, but if you are home birthing, could you pm me? I'm waffling like crazy on the "am I too old to consider a home birth" continuum...

Hmmmmmmmmmmm...maybe its salt I'm craving? I hadn't considered that. Thanks for the idea. I'll try that next time.

Sometimes salty things not only sit well on my tummy but also allow me to be able to drink enough (or at least more) water when my tummy is less than happy with me.

Well, that settles it, Jodie and Jennifer. I'm making oatmeal bars tonight. I called ds to have him make sure to bring me some chocolate chips (the car he took isn't snowed into the driveway). I'm going to use peanut butter. Cakey sounds very appealing to me, especially with a hot cocoa.
If you double it, Jodie, do you use an 11x15 pan or a different size? I have a feeling my kids are going to want to eat these too, so I'd better make sure there's enough for all.

Jennifer, I find that most of my cravings or aversions can be traced back to what I liked as a child. Like I want the soft white bread (wonderbread) of my childhood rather than the whole wheat that I normally love. Crackers and cheese and pickles are a great snack/meal for me because again it's one I loved when I was a child.

Yes I double it and use the 11x15 pan. And that's enough to feed all 10 of us a decent breakfast especially if we also have some yogurt to go with it like I make sure I have for swim meets (such an easy meal when you're having to be up really early and the kids can grab it as they can get it)

I hear ya, Lindsay--McDonalds cheeseburgers are just about the only thing that sounds good to me at dinner time during my first trimester!
I try to at least get a few healthy items onto a "safe foods" list for myself, make them very readily available, and then try to keep to the list as much as I can. Consistency is really good for me during the first trimester anyways--thinking about choices too much makes me feeling sicker. Also, if cookies are the only thing I feel like I can choke down, then I eat cookies. I tend to eat less than usual during the first trimester anyways, so my calories end up just about the same.

You know, I don't know if you have this problem, but my other problem is that there is only so much to eat in the house and I AM ALWAYS HUNGRY and cooking (anything) usually makes me feel like throwing up, so I end up grabbing whatever is in the pantry. Like Honey Nut Cheerios. Or chocolate squares. And then 20 seconds after eating anything carbish and sweet I get this aftertaste and feel like puking. But I still want it!
Actually this pregnancy has been weird as I'm now 21 weeks and still dealing with a little lingering nausea... for most people this would mean they'd gained less weight, but for me it means *more*.
Ham has been my savior. A nice big maple or honey ham in the refrigerator so I can snack on it at will... or leftover roast beef... anything that's basically protein and does not need to be "fixed" (more than once anyway). Now that the chickens are laying again, I made a crustless quiche the other night and the leftovers were great to have in the refrigerator... I've been eating them as snacks. Also soups for snacks have been good, as long as they don't have beans or lots of veggies.

Yeah, this sometimes happens. I'm tempted to get into my kids cereals or crackers, too. I'm worse in the afternoon/night so I try to make dinner plans in the morning and then have one of my kids make the dinner plates if dh isn't home. Looking at food is just entirely unappealing, and usually the smell gets to me before I even see the food.
