I need to purge of some of my books. I have too many cookbooks and other genre. Since some of them are new, never used (dh bought) I would like to sell some to get some money (to buy more books of course!  ).
Has anyone done this? I'm thinking eBay, abebooks, Amazon, half.com, cathswap (but not all are Catholic books)? I dread the shipping process, though. I'd love to hear your experience and advice!

Have you looked into the www.paperbackswap.com website? You post your unwanted books and in exchange receive other people's books they are getting rid of. There is no money involved - I like it because I have gotten rid of many books we were not using and have received some great ones. The website explains it much better.
Last year I sold many on Amazon.com and never had any problems. You might be surprised though how much certain types of books go for (some for 1 cent!) - it may not be worth your while.

I tried this last year and ended up listing over 100 books on ebay/amazon/halfbooks. Not only was it horrible getting ready to ship them, I barely made any money after commissions to the sites and shipping. This year I donated everything to our local library. It was easy to drop them off when we were there anyway, the library will sell them at their used book sale and we'll get the tax deduction. Unless you know that its a popular book with homeschoolers or rare in some way, you'll probably only make a $1 a book if you sell. My time ended up being worth more to me.

I have used cathswap with reasonable success. Some things I just can't get rid of, though! (Like the dreaded Voyages in English...ds used them and dd really prefers the CHC materials.) Some of the books I've disposed of via cathswap were math books...not Catholic, obviously. It's worth taking the time to read the postings there and see what people sell and how much they charge.
I just signed up with paperbackswap.com. It works very well. I hope more homeschoolers sign up, because so far no one wants my books  .

Many times I take mine to HalfPrice Books. I'm always a little disappointed how much I get, but something's better than nothing and I don't have to worry about shipping. I agree, though, that cathswap would be the way to sell certain books. I was devasted to only get about $3 at 1/2price books for Teach Your Child to Read in 100 EZ lessons! I know I could've sold that online somewhere!

Do you have any homeschooling groups that have an end of the year sale or where you could organize one. We are doing that this year. Sometimes we just list the books we have and price and let people contact us - no shipping involved since it is all local. You set the price and sell your own books individually to individuals at a homeschool meeting. We know plenty of Seton homeschoolers that love the Voyages series. We have also sold some books at a garage sale (pretty common and safe and easy to do here) - but again you don't get much for books at a garage sale and it wouldn't be worth it unless there were tons of junk you were also selling. The advantage of selling to other homeschoolers is that you set the price, people negotiate and you just don't sell it if you don't think it is a fair price. I've bought almost all my Kolbe books this way.
I am computer illiterate, so no experience with the on-line stuff.
