We have chatted about this in past years and I wonder if anyone is still keeping the thermostat low to save money and electricity.
We have done it the last couple of years, but this year I have had enough! It is so cold this year and what seemed a tolerable heat inside last year is making me miserable! The kids are even cold.
I just ordered some insulated curtains and have the emergency heat on to back-up the poor heat pump. But I am so tempted to bump the temp up a few degrees.
How about you ladies? Anyone voluntarily freezing yer buns off?

At night time we "freeze our buns" at 58 degrees--with alot of blankets, co-sleepers and hot flashes  this hasn't been a problem. During the day I turn it up to 62 and we have been fine as long as we are "layered". But, we just learned today at the drs. that Amy is not supposed to be cold---so, I guess, we will be turning it up a little more. The trouble is, we are all so used to the chilly temps, that turning the thermostat up will probably drive the rest of us into shorts and t-shirts--(something my boys already wear.)

Well, because our buns are soooo frozen, we're looking at wood burning fireplace inserts! The family room has a huge fireplace, on the north side of the house, that leaks heat and cool, air conditioned air (in the summer), as well as admitting shiver-producing drafts in winter. We have a propane log in it now, and burning the propane minimizes the draft. Still, we use a lot of propane for the 2 furnaces that heat our house. It looks like a wood burning insert would pay for itself in under 3 years. The chimney guys just measured things this morning. I can't wait! And to answer Molly's question - we are freezing our buns off, but maybe not so voluntarily!

We set it to bring the house up to 65-66 first thing in the morning which feels kind of toasty, and then it goes down to 60 during the day, but doesn't always make it.
However, this morning, it was already 62, and I was freezing and needed a bit of warmth to get motivate, so, I bumped it up to 66 again.

We haven't turned our central heat on yet BUT we live in the south (although it was 15 a few nights ago!). We have a woodburning fire place that heats the whole downstairs and then we bought some space heaters for the bedrooms. It has been saving us money.

We're still at 66. We've burned a cord of wood already (the one we got for free...) and have to buy more soon!

Molly, it's been about 8 years since we've had electric heat (wood stove now and I can be rather free with the heat) but when we did.. I found that sometimes I just had to have the house truly WARM.. it might only be until the house reached that point (i'm thinking 72ish.. so I would feel warm clear through) then I'd turn it back down.. and do ok again for a time.

Dh won't go for going too low...he tells me it messes with the musical instruments (several guitars) and some electronics if you get below 60...so we are at 65 steady, day and night. During the day it'll feel warmer because the sun is out too.
I was thinking the title of this thread is appropriate since isn't most of the country is "freezing yer buns off" whether they want to or not!

16 degrees here -- that's 60 degrees F! And the boiler is set to go on only twice a day, morning and evening. It was fine until our recent cold snap. Then the house didn't get above 14 degrees (57 F) even with the boiler on full blast! Brrrrr!

Same here -- except that we turned on the heat for a day once. We live in the snow zone of the Sierra mts and our big wood stove keeps the central part of the house about 62 to 64 degrees. At night it drops to the mid-50's but most of us are the kind of people that need cold to sleep well so we are all comfortable.
Hardest time is first thing in the morning  -- the hour after I wake up and before the wood stove really gets the heat out.

You know what, I am very strange. I am always warm. I rarely wear a sweater or feel truly cold (No. Cal). It IS cold here. Some family members BEG me to turn up the heat (ha----it's a war) but I literally will start to become uncomfortable just doing normal busy work around the house. I have to then run outside to "cool" off. Pant pant pant.... !

We keep ours at 67 in the daytime, and around 62 at night. That said, we have a turn of the century poorly insulated house- so when it is -40 out with the windchill we need some extra warm feeling when we come in!

We are at 60 during the day and 50 at night. Yep, I am cold!

We're 64 right when we get up, then 62 all day and 57 at night. We live in an old house without insulation (I didn't even know that was legal!) and the upstairs is about six degrees colder than that so I guess we're in the low 50s at night. My dad sent us a big box of army surplus blankets and we do pretty well.

Ok how sad is this, I miss freezing my buns off!!! In Okinawa right now I think it's about 65 with the wind blowing. It can really feel cold because it's ocean wind. I really do miss the snow and having the heat on!!! Ok, now you ladies can call me crazy!!!  For the added crazy bonus I usually have my air running all year round.

I am freezing my buns and I did not sign up for the drop the thermostat challenge
I think the house is set for 68 (that is dh's department), which is pretty warm, huh? But today especially, we have been FREEZING!!!

Wow, a surreal thread for me, I'm in the opposite dilemma, whether to turn the air conditioning down a few more degrees and know it's going to cost a bit more when electricty is just gone up a hugh 20% in our Australian state..
Though we have been reading in our papers about the record cold weather the States and Europe have been experiencing...

64 during the day, 58 at night. We live in Northern California, so the heat comes on in the early morning and then doesn't run during the rest of the day. It will occasionally run at night, but only when it's particularly cold.
