Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My dh and I are looking into going to Alaska for our 20th anniversary(August 2010). I have a few questions which hopefully some of you may be able to help me with.
1. Anyone who has been there or lives there, what are the must see sights?
2. How do you recommend we travel while we are there, tour or rent a car?
3. Are we better of on a tour type trip than going it alone?
4. Where should we stay?
I am thinking we will have at least 10 days for our trip. The only other thing I am weighing out is taking our 10yr old dd along with us. It would be the trip of a lifetime for her however selfishly I would like it to be just dh and I.
Thanks for reading/listening.

I have been to Alaska by boat. If you want to see the south-eastern coast this is the way to go. The cities of Juneau and Skagway are on this coastline, as well as many spectacular inlets with glaciers coming right down to the sea. One memorable day we had was taking the White Pass and Yukon railroad (which my great-grandfather helped build and run) up to Lake Bennett (I hope that's the right name!). It runs on a narrow gauge rail clinging to steep mountain passes next to the original Gold Rush trail (which can still be seen). At Lake Bennett, a gold miner's lunch of soup and sourdough was served. Then, we took the train back to Skagway. I'll bet your son would love that trip!
I strongly recommend you travel in late July or August, as the weather is best then in the Northwest and Alaska. It can be pretty foggy and rainy the rest of the year, and it would be a shame to get up there and not be able to see anything because of nasty weather. Have fun!

I have a few recommendations for you!
If you are flying in, I recommend flying into Anchorage and renting a car there. From there you can go anywhere on the road system. Keep in mind that distances there are greater than you may think. Plan on staying overnight *at least* wherever you go.
Whatever you do, do not miss Denali. It will blow you away.
Headed north from Anchorage, Talkeetna is a super little town with great views of Denali, and the Talkeetna Roadhouse is a charming, rustic, not too expensive place to stay. Great place to spend the night before or after Denali park. Get up early because once you get to Denali you will take a bus into the park. It's a bumpy ride but totally glorious. Plan on spending the entire day,( do bring food!)you will see plenty of moose, bears, Dall sheep, caribou, and of course the mountain. It is my favorite place in the whole world. Say hi to the mountain for me, will you?

Driving south from Anchorage down the Kenai penninsula to Seward is one of our favorite things to do. You can take a tour boat to go whale sighting, see glaciers calving, sea lions, puffins, etc. They also have a really nice sea life center, and a cute walkable downtown. Great for a couple of days.

Either of these places (Denali or Seward) are also accessible by the wonderful Alaska Railroad, which is fun to take so you can leave the driving to someone else.
Palmer is a pretty, scenic town and a neat place to stop for a little while. The Musk ox farm is kinda cool.
I'm not sure that trying to make it as far north as Fairbanks with only 10 days would be a wise use of time, but if you decide to do that let me know and I'll set you up with some stuff to do there. We know a great flight-seeing operation that can take you up to the arctic circle for polar bear or caribou viewing, depending on when you go.
Let me know if you need more info on anything!
