I'm trying to find a children's china/porcelain tea set that is not made in China. I have found some plastic ones not made in China, but none that are china/porcelain (another question: I'm not up to speed on these things, is there a difference between china and porcelain, the same? what is diff?).
Anyways, anyone know of a not made in China china children's tea set?

Check out the fair trade organization SERRV. They have a number of tea sets from different countries. I haven't ordered anything besides chocolate from them yet, but I may order some baskets and tea accessories this year.
Last year, my girls got a little tea set from For Small Hands. It is really cute, similar to Fiesta Ware, but it is Chinese, and the teapot does not pour well.

This is something I've been hunting for as well...my search has led me to demitasse cups! You can find really adorable little demitasse tea sets on ebay. I haven't gotten a set yet...it's something I'm considering for Christmas. But, I got the idea from my mom who has these lovely little demitasse cups with wildflowers on them that my daughter and I love to use when we go to her house. So, I started searching on them and they're quite common in flea markets and thrift stores and ebay. Something to consider! Some of the sets are quite affordable.

There is a beautiful one sold by Vision Forum - very very expensive - I do not have it but have admired it and the fact it is made in Germany - Heirloom Tea Set
You could also check out another (very expensive) one that I have long admired - but I am not absolutely certain it is made in the US - Lenox Butterfly Meadow
I think Jen's idea is wonderful - my problem is that I have never ever been on Ebay and have no idea what to do. Sigh...my last British teapot shattered on our granite countertop this week (and it was not my boys - it was me) - I could really do with going on ebay as I would love the Victorian rose pattern.

I found a not expensive set, and cute too on the site you mentioned Molly. It is made in Vietnam. Think better than China???

this one's made in the USA and quite cute
ikea carries one that my daughter has but we can't remember if it's China-made or not
more pricey sets to drool over
here's where i go to dream but i don't know which ones are made in china and which ones are not
not as pricey here but still a bit up there -- i love that they have a section called tea sets not made in china; here's another

oh, and i second the suggestion for demitasse sets. when our 7-yo had her birthday tea party we didn't have enough cups, so we used our espresso set.

I think the Fair Trade aspect makes the Vietnamese set better, even if both countries don't treat their people well. The idea is that the money goes directly to the craft people instead of a corporation that would give so little compensation to the crafter. I would buy Fair Trade from China, too. Empower the people and those countries may be changed from the inside. In the meantime, it may mean that a family will live better.

Oh Stef - those are very dangerous links!! Causing some serious envy here. Before I had children I had a lovely teapot collection - but when we moved to the US I had to give them away because shipping was so hard. We have a smaller house with no room for a china cabinet - my dh always jokes that I want to move just so that I can have a china cabinet and start collecting teapots again

I'm mostly just worried about lead paint, so to me if something doesn't come from China, then I shouldn't worry. What do you guys think? But that is why I questioned the Vietnamese set, because would they necessarily be any better in that department, ykwim? I couldn't find any statements on the SERRV site that they were lead-free.

i cannot answer about the lead in SERRV products -- this is also why we avoid most "made in China" stuff -- sadly, we don't know anymore what can poison our kids and what won't. but to be fair, old fiesta ware had dangerous uranium at one point. i do know that Reutter porcelain is lead- and cadmium-free.

I found the exact flower fairies tea set that Stef linked to (but not in a basket) at Homesense (the Canadian equivalent of T.J. Maxx) for 24.99. Made in Germany. We live in close proximity to a U.S. border, and I usually find that our stores here in Canada carry the same types of things as those in the U.S. I might check T.J Maxx first...I think mini tea sets are a popular item this year.

oh, I am so glad to hear I'm not alone! after searching for an affordable but sturdy tea set for my DD, I gave up and bought her a bunch of little espresso cups and a syrup server at a hotel closeout sale. THEY HAVE BEEN A HUGE HIT! and practically unbreakable, which is really important around here.
but now for a confession: since expanding our horizons worked so well, we have added (don't laugh) sake cups. you know, the tiny cups for Japanese wine? really, they're perfect for little hands. and with the large Asian population here, they're extremely common (and ridiculously cheap) at thrift stores.
OK, so I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I had to toss it out there in case anyone else needs to think outside the tea-set box.

Don't be embarrassed! I think sake cups, and Japanese tea sets as well, are wonderful! We use these as well. I got our Japanese set -- 8 cups and a 4-cup teapot -- at an antique shop for $4.

I would check Lenox to see if they are still made in the US. I used to work there (years ago) and an old co-worker of mine told me they shut down the plant in New Jersey and moving it all to China.
