Kirsten is being retired.  She's my favorite. If you have a dd who loves Kirsten, you might want to order early for Christmas...

So sad at the news, Books! We have a Samantha that was my little sister's 15 years ago that was passed down to my 2nd DD. When she was retired last year my DD cried for days.
I'm sure there will be some heartbroken little girls.

oh no!!!!!!!
She's my favorite!!!! and the one my dd7 has not said she wanted!!!! (she has Kaya, Kit, and Molly!) i figured Kirsten would be a forever one in the line - she reminds me of Laura Ingalls Wilder!!!!!
i am very sad!!!!

I'm surprised too, thanks for the heads up!
We have her already and have even done the "new head/hair" thing with her! She dioes seem so Laura Ingalls-ish and I would think a great representative of an amazing time period in American history.
Bummer!

How sad. I really liked Kirsten, but my dd chose Felicity. Why are they retiring these dolls?

This frustrates me to no end. WHY do they do that?! I'm sure it's a "this doll doesn't make us enough money" kind of a thing, but  .

actually, i think it is more along the lines of getting people to buy.
i am willing to bet, that when they announced the retiring of Samantha, that her sales shot up.
and then, they could introduce a new doll, too.
so - my guess is sales are slow right now anyway due to the economy. announcing the retiring of a doll will probably boost sales of that one as people will not want to miss their chance at having her.
anyway, i still think it stinks.

Don't they only retire them temporarily? My neice said that Felicity was retired back in the 90's and now she is back. (not sure if that is acurate though because we weren't into them then)

I agree with Laura on this one. I think its a move to boost sales, and I also think (this is the cynical side of me) that they move the older dolls for the newer "historical" dolls of the 70's and such that are just a little bit more trendy.  That's the part I don't like.
But I have a sneaking suspicion that they may end up bringing dolls back after many years, for a limited time, kind of like Disney does with their classics. I don't think Felicity was ever discontinued, but I'm not positive...

I don't think that Felicity was discontinued either. They just took her out of the catalogue. You could still purchase her products, but they were bringing out new dolls and focusing on them in the catalogue. Then, of course, they did the movie and she was a big hit again. It is all marketing. And yes, it stinks!

I'm seriously considering buying Kirsten! My dd is too young for her now, but that is one of the dolls I was keeping my eye on for when she is a bit older.
The only problem is the push to buy all the accessories you think you could possibly want now. The the price tag is quite  !!
Call me cynical, but it's all about the money. I'm sure, just as Disney uses the vault, this is a AG company ploy to keep the value of the dolls way up there.

Ya know....I very rarely have non-buyer's remorse.....but for the past couple years, we really WANTED the Lucia outfit and wreath, but I just never bought it....I obessed about it PLENTY  ...but never pushed BUY. I kept thinking my mom could make all that, etc. And, now those St. Lucy-wreaths are going for $50+ on ebay!!!!!!
Oh well. That'll teach me.....

Gah. Have you checked eBay? My dd6 wants Kirsten or Josefina for Christmas. I haven't checked eBay yet, but... maybe we'll have to go with Josefina. A friend of mine recently had good success with a Samantha doll on Craigs List. It was in excellent condition for $50. So I might check there, too...

We have Kirsten, my dd wanted some of her outfits before they are discounted, and theyare all sold out or on back order. They are going for big money on ebay

My 9yod loves AG but I don't like that I can't get the dolls without the book ... she always gets the books before the doll and then wants the doll!
Also, when Samantha was retired I think it was to make way for another doll of the era -- Rebeckah (?), part of a Jewish immigrant family in NY. So it may be just because they don't want a bunch of the same era and can get us moms to buy more! Maybe they'll intro another Kirsten-era doll. I always loved the clothes of Kristen -- all those hand-knits!
They do occasionally pull dolls from the catalog ... but they're usually still available on the site, they're just not pushing them for some reason.
The vagaries of AG ... I wish they hadn't sold out to Mattel -- I think it would be easier to spend the money if it was still a family op!
