Good Grief...this is all my four sons could TALK ABOUT....they are all in shock...can't believe it!!! I came out of Lily's speech therapy and braced for bad news, when I saw the look on oldest ds's face...and he blurts out, "Favre is coming out of retirement". Uh? What?? Oh For Pete's Sake!!! I thought something really scary had happened!!! We are all die hard Colt's fans....We might have moved from Indy...but you can't take our BLUE from us!!!!

My son is a Vikings fan -- he said he didn't want him. I think he's heard too much sports talk.

Poor Mr. Favre. I can't believe that teams keep signing him. They need to stop enabling him -- he needs to retire and needs a good reality check. What is his wife saying to him?

From all the talk on the radio and at my dinner table, I totally feel like I'm in the minority thinking: what's the big deal if he still wants to play? Why does he *have to* retire? If he wasn't good enough or worth the money, no one would hire him.
A job is important to a man. He loves his job -- and as long as his body can take it, he'd like to still do his favorite job if a team will take him.
Dan totally disagrees with me. He thinks it's not being a good team leader to miss summer workouts.

No one forced him into retirement. I think he can't make up his mind, having gone into retirement 2 or 3 times now, then resigns with another team.
And how sad to be part of the Packers for so long and then have these indecisive years to mar the memory of a good player? It doesn't look good.
And I agree with Dan.

As Packer season ticket holders, there is nothing more we are wishing for than victory over the Vikings! We have Vikings fans that sit next to us - should be fun ... my diehard football fan DH won't even talk about Favre anymore, he's that disenchanted his last few years. And yes, we're all secretly hoping you Vikings don't go the Superbowl!!!

I agree. Besides how COULD he dare sign with such a rival of the Packers? Where is his loyalty?
Not like I really care, but my Dad is a super big Packers fan . . .

Hey,
I have never been much of a football fan but it sure was fun watching our Twin Cities come alive with excitement this past week. The up-to-the minute coverage of his plane landing, the helicopter providing live coverage as he was driven to the airport, etc...it was a nice diversion from all of the bad news in the world these days! And since I have a few years on Favre, I think he is young enough to keep playing if he wants to. I have many relatives in WI and I know they are not happy about it. They were already calling him "Brent" in June of this year. Perhaps he can provide a much needed positive role model to a team which has had some troubled moral dilemas in the not too distant past!
Oh well, GO VIKINGS!!!

Laura...tell your son that this is like him becoming a Sith Lord Apprentice...for him to really become a Sith Lord he would have had to sign with the Bears!

Go Colts!!!! (Did you remember we beat the Bears a few short years ago in the Super Bowl...ahhhh...savoring the moment!!) I think Payton is looking older this season....I can't imagine my hometown without Payton Manning....what a class act. Oops, sorry, this was about Mr. Favre....There are so few football fans around my new digs, it is nice to talk a little ball with my friends...I have to admit, though, I am about ready for it all to be over come January...and get my Sundays back.
Question...do any of your dc do the Fantasy Football leagues?? What do you think?? We have let our teen boys do it, but it seems awfully time consumming at times.

I would like to point out that Payton Manning, Eli Manning, and Bret Favre are all from Mississippi. As a native Mississippian, its nice to see these men doing well.
That being said, I'm just tired of Favre being on the front page of my Twin Cities newspaper. Front page of Sports - OK but of the whole newspaper? Health Care reform, Darfur, Afghanistan, anything? I'm climbing down off my soap box now.

My 6yos reaction: lucky for the Packers! He and his 10yobrother, who know everything about football , say "good riddance" ....
Ah yes, Waverley ... but the Manning boys (and their dad) are famous for playing splendidly at LSU! [Just kidding, btw ... we're BIG LSU fans here ]

Actually, Archie and Eli played college ball at Ole Miss (University of Mississippi) while Peyton upset the entire state of Mississippi by attending (gasp) the University of Tennessee. For you midwesterners, this is the equivalent of Favre switching from the Packers to the Vikings only worse in that it broke with family tradition as well.
Eli and Peyton were both born in New Orleans however since Archie and his wife were living in New Orleans at the time while Archie played for the Saints. So I will have to acknowledge some Louisiana influence.
I hope you know I'm saying this in fun.

Love it, Waverly!!! I love talking football every once in a while..the boys are impressed when I can "talk the talk" occasionally, raising this many football fanatics, I have to pay attention to this world!
I know the Manning family helped out after Hurricane Katrina. I hope they never bring shame to their reputation....while we discourage "idol worship" of these guys, it is nice to see well mannered men in sports. I got teary when Eli and his team won the Super Bowl, and they showed Payton hugging him in the locker room and telling him "I love you". Awww..how nice is that???
I do wish Favre all the best, I would never want all of the attention those guys get....I would find it hard to have every move I make scrutinized by all.

You may have guessed but my family and the Manning family have known each other for generations. Our families are from the very small town of Drew, Mississippi in the Mississippi Delta. 4 lads mom, if your boys have to pick football players to look up to - I would highly recommend Archie, Eli, and Peyton.
