Can anyone recommend some good Christian music for tweens and teens. I am very conservative about the lyrics etc of today's music and am trying to find some Christian alternatives. I had allowed my daughter to listen to some Taylor Swift (we download songs for her listening once we have checked out the lyrics) - but am getting a bit uneasy with her too - especially after reading the lyrics to Taylor Swift's song Love Story. The objection I have to so many of these "teen stars" is that the lyrics are just froth and so focused on 'finding myself", "true love" etc etc - something that teens actually know very little about.
I am working on a blog post with links that have been recommended to me - but know very little about many of the artists recommended.
Thank you.

Marilyn, my dd really likes Casting Crowns, Superchick (they are sort of more "hard" rock, but Christian), Jars of Clay and we all love Brandon Heath. Oh and we like Newsboys too. And another oh...we like Steven Curtis Chapman too.

hi mrs. w,
this is aisa, stef's daughter. i'll put my recommendations into two categories -- worship, and more pop-ish (meaning they're Christian, but as you can see by the lyrics, they're don't fit into the 'worship' category), and i might suggest an album...
#1 worship band ever :) in my opinion -- Hillsong United
they're not Catholic, but they actually led worship at WYD last year
try their album United We Stand
worship, Aaron Shust, album Anything Worth Saying
Matt Maher (Catholic) fits into both categories, tryWelcome to Life
Barlow Girl also fits into both categories. they do have a couple songs that mother and i have discussed and have determined are not quite in line with Catholic teaching, ex: I Need You To Love Me
ditto the Casting Crowns suggestion, and Jars of Clay
Jeremy Camp, another that fits into both categories, as well as his wife, Adie, try Restored and Don't Wait
Relient K, more pop-ish, you'll probably want to review the lyrics. most of their songs are good... ex: For The Moments I Feel Faint... but every now and then you get a 'strange' song like Deathbed.
Switchfoot ~ also both categories ~ again, review lyrics, they're #2 on my list next to Hillsong, but it's sometimes a question of age appropriate than 'strange' as opposed to Relient K. hmm... good example would be Easier Than Love, good and thought-provoking but may not be age-appropriate yet.

I love Martin Doman too and the youth I worked with at our parish loved his music as well.

Thank you all for your suggestions - Aisa especially I really appreciate your time and input. I have heard of some of these and will be checking them all out. My dc are getting to the ages where they are interested in music and I want to make sure they have music which is cool but which has good lyrics.
Some websites which may be hepful to others;
Focus on the Family's plugged in review site -http://www.pluggedinonline.com/music/
Site which finds Christian alternatives to various secular musicians - http://youthfire.com/media/compare/
thank you all again - hugs for taking the time to "educate" me ( I tend to listen mainly to classical music so am in need of education!)

All the previously mentioned bands and artists are good. My 10 yodd likes Toby Mac a lot and Barlow Girls (who are homeschooled sisters from the next town over!)
My teenage boys (and I) really like Fr Stan fortuna. He is pretty hard core though. Lots of social justice issues and he doesn't pull any punches. Definitely not for everyone!

The only radio station we listen to is 91.9 -- I think you can pick that up Marilyn. It's Christian contemporary format and "family friendly." There is no mention of news, tragedy, politics which I appreciate with all ages in the car (and even for myself at times!)
You can listen to a lot of songs on youtube yourself as a "free preview". Also try Pandora and type in some of the groups/artists mentioned in this thread.

one word about many Christian radio stations (such as K-Love, which i know is national) - if you read their Statement of Faith, it is anti-catholic. just fyi.
anyway - Matt Maher is awesome.

Here's a shameless promotion for my DH's cd - it is pop/hard rock, but you won't find any objectionable lyrics! http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/tritzjoe We also enjoy chris tomlin, casting crowns, toby mac, plumb, barlow girls (ditto to comments above), newsboys, jars of clay, michael w. smith, dc talk, rebecca st. james, and all the P&W from hillsong - actually a good number of the contemporary christian singers out there.

I forgot! Here's a website I check out every once in a while -- this is how we discovered some of the Catholic musicians out there that we never hear about otherwise.

Marilyn,
We are huge music fans here. Our children play instruments and we sing alot.
We have always listened to music and I would say have known most of the ones above for some time.
Another of my favourites as I love Celtic music is Revival in Belfast by Robin Mark. He also does Shout to the North.
Sons of Korah also are very good. Their music is based on the psalms.
Eden's Bridge is also an all time favourite.
On the side bar of my blog I actually list these and ohters.
Something we love as a family are theme songs from Movies eg: Cars, the "princess movies" Ever after, Enchanted etc
Once again my boys check lyrics as well and we are pretty stict with this. They are very good at deleting anything that does not come up to standard.
WE also download music
Many Blessings

My DH has been working with high school and college students for years, so we stay on top of the popular Christian music. I have to second Aisa's suggestion of Hillsong United! I LOVE them!
Also, I didn't see him mentioned on here, but David Crowder is really great as well!

Thank you all so much again. We have listened to lots of samples. Our current favorites are
Matt Maher - top of the list (and he is going to be in concert locally soon - dd is wanting to go!)I actually really really am enjoying his music - especially Your Grace is Enough
Martin Doman - hard to find clips to listen to but we love what we have heard
Hillsong - liked many of their songs
Casting Crowns - liked many of their songs
Steve Curtis Chapman - we already knew Cindrella and it is one of our favorites - now listening to some others.
Blessings

This is a timely thread for our family, too. Marilyn, we seem on the same page, lately!
I have one more recommendation--it is a local Catholic band but they have appeared on Life on the Rock and toured all over and Daniel de Silva played at WYD '08:
Crispin
I love their album, Psalmba, and Fishers of Men is one of my favorite songs from that album...of course, I am not a teen or a tween. But I think all ages would enjoy their music.
