Yesterday morning I was looking at the diasaster that is my basement. The basement flooded 4 times this past year and we have never finished putting it back together. I was moaning that we would never have a block of time sufficient to clean this with all of my kids around to help.

Well yesterday afternoon the "swine flu" hit my county. My oldest's high school is closed until Monday, and all extra-curriculars have been cancelled. The health department requested that all potentially exposed families stay home for the next 5 days to minimize tranmission of the virus.

After a few minutes of being sad for those infected, the only thing I could think of was "Yeah! We can finish the basement." I can't remember the last time we had 5 days at home with no other obligations. I am relishing not running around and getting some long over due projects finished.

Now I feel a smidge guilty.

No you are not wrong to be happy! I think in this age of mass communication we "know everybody's business" and we feel we have to feel sad, etc at all the bad news we hear. But I don't think the human person was designed by God to deal with *everyone's* sadness! I think it can drive a person batty! So I think you are totally right to feel a momentary sadness for them, pray for them, then rejoice that in YOUR life, God has granted you many days to get something done that you needed to.

I can't agree with Cay more...I have asked that Caroline keep posting little snippets...such food for thought and prayer.

However, I might have to add that to my books to buy when I am ordering school books!

Thank you so much for the kind and insightful thoughts. Even more cases have been reported in our area, and there is talk of closing all the schools for a few days to slow down the spread of the disease. While I am not a reactionary, I am beginning to think this is a good idea. My fairly small area has over 10 cases confirmed, with many more suspected.   



We are making progress, and none too soon! Unbeknownest to me, there were buckets in the back that had damp books, and are not filled with black slimy mold    We are taking a literal breather! I have 2 dehumidifiers running and 2 air filters. Ugh!

I know what you mean about using a bad situation. When my hubby hurt his knee last year and was out of commision for 4 months all I kept thinking about was how much he was going to help with being around the house

I couldn't agree more. We are a people of joy. Many saints even write about the joy they experience amidst great suffering. In our morning offerings, we offer all our prayers, works, joys, and suffering to Jesus through the Immaculate Heart of Mary. We can offer those joys up just as much as we can offer up our sufferings.
