Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

As I get older, a have more babies I find my memory is slipping further..or maybe it is because I don't usually have a break from breastfeeding to pregnancy..not sure.

But I have noticed with the last two children that with this big slip in memory that it seems to be affecting my spelling. Words I could always spell I have to really think about and often I'm wrong!

I also find that when I'm writing fast I'll write 'their' instead of 'there' or 'too' instead of 'to'. If I go back a peruse, I pick them up immediately but I'd be very interested to hear if anyone else struggles in this way..

This seems to be true for me. --Although I haven't only blamed it on babies, I blame is also on sickness.

My husband thinks that it just happens because there are so many things spinning around in my brain all the time--everything gets jumbled up! If it is quiet (which is usually never) or if I can take the time to think things through carefully, I remember and can spell--sometimes

Funny you say that Joann, because I noticed the decline in my mental sharpness, the spelling problem and word confusion after my major sickness with the baby before Annuncia, I had a severe case of pluerisy and pneumonia with longterm complications to my thyroid from a nuclear raditation scan to my lungs.

Then after Annuncia I had the heart virus which drained my body in way I've never experienced before, it went on for 10 months all up.

These are the only two children where I've had that sort of sickness after birth..so you might be right there.

And yes, I said to dh the other day "I just feel I have no room for too much info, it just gets shunted out, like it goes in one ear and out the other!"

Here too! It's like I can't think straight anymore, especially if more than one thing is going on in front of me (i.e. two children trying to talk to me, two fighting over a toy while someone else is talking to me, you know...like all the time ). I particularly have word finding problems - I'm forever saying, "Could you go downstairs and get the thing on the table next to the other thing...you know, the blue thing?"

ETA: I was never the best speller to begin with, there were always words I just couldn't remember...but now there seem to be much more of them.

yes, I think it's definately part of just there being so much going on around you when you have a big family. It's hard to focus on one thing when you're juggling 3 (or more.. often more).

But your body does use up extra nutrient when pregnant and nursing and YOU are the one to get the shortage.. so you may need to check on if you're getting enough. I know that baby number 4 seemed to be the turning point for me.. at that point regular vitamins just barely were keeping my head above water..
I was SO VERY T I R E D. And my, at the time, new midwife recommended a different formula of prenatal vitamins with a much higher level of all the vitamins and minerals and in one week I litereally went from not being able to stay awake around 2 in the afternoon to not even feeling like I needed to rest.

So I would seriously look into your physical needs as well as making allowances that you can only hold onto so many things going on at once.. so the less used stuff gets "lost".

I keep threatening to make my oldest my personal secretary

Oh just do what my dh does.. after two tries you call the child "fred" and move on (hint: no one is actually named fred)

This is especially hilarious when it's one of the girls.. or the 4 yr old who will immediately reply "my name not fred.. my name..."

Oh the vitamins my midwife recommends are NF Formulas Prenatal Forte.. they're somewhat simliar to Rainbow Light Complete (the 6 a day ones) I think you can find both online to see what's in them and be able to compare to local products.

Yep, me too. I never thought I'd be a Scarlett O'Hara, but I find myself saying, "I can't think about that now, I'll think about that tomorrow."

I often have to say to the children when I mix up my words, (for example, "Hey, Sweetie, please throw Mom's glasses in the trash and put this paper plate in the medicine cabinet.") "Please do what I meant, not what I said."

I do all of that and worse.

we laugh that I type and write dyslectic these days.

but it's annoying

I'm constantly walking into rooms and then finding I have no idea why I'm there.

and sometimes I make no sense at all to anyone expect dh. My words aren't slurred, but they don't come out in order or I'll misplace a word with a different related word.

for example, Bring me the glack glue and paper.
when what I meant to say was bring me the glue and black paper.

I do MUCH better online because as you noted, I can pick up on my errors before others see them most of the time. If I bother.

and I notice that it gets MUCH worse when I'm particuliarly tired and or stressed.

I've been taking care to take my vit/min and oils and altho I don't notice it much while taking them, I do notice a marked worsening able a week after stopping them. Even with them tho it's still pretty bad some days.

LOL YES! I'm bad about that too. So bad, that when I was pregnant with the last, the 2 yr old would rub my tummy and call in-utero baby "What's Your Name"

I do all of the above mentioned things, the mixing up names and words, not being able to complete a sentence, and constantly forgetting. The thing that really bugs me though, is that I feel like I am actually forgetting things that I used to know, basic knowledge type of things like state capitals or the names of Beatles' songs. (We have been playing a little Sporcle around here and I can't remember a thing!) The kids will ask me grammar or science questions that I know I once knew and I just can't remember. It is really frustrating!

And Maddie, you sound like me. I am constantly saying things like take the trash out to the oven or unload the washing machine!

Ladies!

I can VERY much relate-and though I DO find it funny-it is oh so frustrating!!

Anne, you said you are getting older. This memory and word recall problem is a MAJOR symptom of Estrogen defenciency, and can come with perimenopause....which can occur between the ages of 30-45. When we are preggo or breastfeeding, we also have lots of Progesterone, and it doesn't take much to tip the ratio of too much Progesterone to not enough Estrogen.

I would see if you can have your Estrogen levels checked! Thyroid could be contributing, but it points more to classic textbook low-Estrogen(specifically Estradiol Beta 17).

Just a thought.

On a funny note(because one DOES need humor, or else we WILL lose it!! )...you know it's VERY bad, when you've gone through ALL of your dc's names...AND your animals...until finally reaching the dc's name that was somewhere in your brain!!

This would totally crack my kids up, because their uncle and late grandfather's names actually ARE Fred.    My dh may not find it as funny who was the youngest of 4 and often called Fred.

My SIL often calls their dog Eddie - that's my dh's name!

My sisters and I call this phenomenon "Mom-brain" and we get a big kick out of it. It is funny, but I am wondering if we will return to normal after menopause?
