will you be drinking it again aftere Lent is over and why go back to it if you've been without it for 6 weeks. Just wondering. I haven't had any even on Sundays, mostly because the baby has been sick, but I'm so ready to have a cup tomorrow.

YES! I am too clumsy without my coffee, and I don't even drink that much. We also continue our Lenten fast on Sundays through Lent. Aren't we supposed to(not trying to be snarky, I really would like to know, maybe I could have some tomorrow)?

Our pastor (a very good priest) said one year that the parish didn't stop doing donuts and coffee during Lent because it is a sin to fast on a feast day--Sunday always being a feast day. He even thought that it would be a source of pride for many people to go a "whole forty days" with something. Also, depending on how you count Lent can only be forty days without the Sundays (some people say Holy Week is not part of Lent and count the Sundays to get back to forty--anyone know what the official statement on that is?).
Anyway, I think its sort of a prudential judgment. One year dh and I gave up spending money on anything that wasn't absolutely necessary. But one of the main days we would unnecessarily spend money was Sundays so we kept that resolution over the Sundays as well.
Oh, and Ruth, I have given up coffee in the past and I usually give it up when I'm pregnant. I always end up going back. Opinions seems so divided on whether or not coffee is bad for you. My midwife reamed me out for having a glass of wine when I was pregnant and in the next sentence said that coffee was totally fine. I think its such an inexpensive little "treat" in my day.

Oh no, we don't fast on Sundays during Lent. I agree with you. I'm just wondering why I would put myself through the withdrawal headaches again next year. But I do enjoy this one little treat in the mornings.

Oh, my yes! I miss my morning cup of coffee! That's what makes it a really good sacrifice for me. I spent the three weeks of pre-lent weaning myself, Ruth. It must have helped because I never had withdrawal headaches once Lent started. Anyhoo...I'm thrilled tomorrow is Sunday!!! My coffee pot is already programmed to go off in the morning!
As to the Sundays in Lent - we've always taken a break from our Lenten sacrifices on Sundays during Lent. I can only think of one special sacrifice (years ago) we made an exception for and carried through Sunday. Sunday is a Feast day - a mini-Easter - every Sunday, even in Lent. St. Francis said that even the walls should feast on Christmas day...how much more so on Easter! We are trying really hard to underscore our Sundays as mini-Easters - in fact, this is one of our Lenten focuses. So, delicious meals, tidy home, family games, corporal works of mercy...and COFFEE!!

Oh my ... Sundays for us are a day of Joy in the Resurrection so we always allow ourselves the thing we gave up, if we "need" to. I cannot give up my coffee due to too many Migraines.. even my medicine contains Caffeine if I need it. Sundays are not part of the 40 days anyway so enjoy!
