Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

According to Time Magazine

I am too tired to make heads or tails of this right now. Any views? Is this part of the whole msm thing? Another anti-Catholic and anti-life ploy?

I saw this and wondered, too.

Respecting the "no politics" policy here, I still must say that I can't figure out what Time is after, here. It's bizarre. Perhaps someone will offer to open a discussion on her blog?

Did not read the article, but I've have heard that it's a mere distraction, that it will never pass, but keep pro-lifers busy. So then there will be items passed piecemeal from FOCA we'll be too distracted to notice and gain support against it.

Well, here's some info I found:

1. NARAL says this bill was introduced in 1989 and "gained bi-partisan support" -- but obviously not enough to get it much beyond being introduced. (NARAL)
2. According to SNOPES, it's only been introduced twice with the most recent being 2007-2008 legislative session but has NEVER gotten out of committee. (Snopes)

Now, this only means we have to be watchful ... if I were pro-choice, I would do an "end run" like Jenn mentions and add bits and pieces to various bills to ensure that eventually everything in the current proposal would be law. For instance, here's a link to a "Prevention First" bill that may be more insidious than FOCA: Prevention First. Further, here's an interesting article about a dubious novena.

I think one of the blessings of this past election has been that more and more folks (on BOTH sides) are much more aware of what is going on. Again, it's good to check and recheck sources; call USCCB to confirm or deny legislative action. But be aware, because this isn't going away anytime soon ... and there seems to be a growing attitude that "give the people what they want" is more important than ensuring "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for all".

Thanks for all the information. I was asked about the article by some pro-abortion people - and my brain just could not get round it.

Interesting, this exact article was in the New York Times yesterday.

Like the article says, the President himself said that it was his first priority to sign the FOCA so why is the media acting like it is a phantom?

My guess is that the campaign is having some effect on both Catholics and Congress and so this article is to combat that effect.

Pray without ceasing.

There's an organization called the Susan B. Anthony List that keeps track of all legislation that affects any pro-life issues. It's a great resource.

Anyway, that's where I look (actually, they email me now) for the kind of info you're talking about. It's also the website I referred to my semi-Catholic bil when he claimed that "no one's been doing anything about pro-life, so using that issue to vote is just ignorant."

Sorry--this is not meant to be political, just informative. I don't have a blog.

It's definitely not a phantom but it was also a political speech given during a campaign where he was preaching to the choir. Of course he'd tell PP that he'd sign it ... it's not even a bill that's being debated so it's a typical political maneuver to be able to say, "well, I wanted to sign it/sponsor it/back it/ but gosh, no one has brought it to me yet ... but thanks for the money you gave my campaign".

As I've mentioned before, FOCA and similar bills are always a possibility that needs to be recognized and those who are concerned need to be able to "mobilize" and fight for or against. In a way, the Times article shows the power of the Catholic network, that mobilized early!

Here's the link to the Susan B. Anthony list . Also, if you pull it up you'll see mention of the increased FEDERAL FUNDING proposal for Planned Parenthood ... that too is something that needs to be watched.
