Sarah....
I have a tough 9 yr. old also. He really likes those activity kits you buy at the museum stores. He's done a plaster cast mummy that he wrapped and placed in a tomb that he painted. He's done a kit that comes with a knight and some activities and now he wants a Wooly Mammoth head that you build. He also covets his brother's candy making kit .

Have you looked at the Klutz books? Klutz They have several that might appeal to a boy. Also I started a thread asking for recommendations for my 8 yo so you might find some of the reccomendations there useful. You can read it here.

Jumping in late, but we've started toolboxes for our boys (and sewing kits for our girls - very sexist ). That way we can add to them as the years go by. The hardest thing is remembering who has what!
