We are going to South Bend, IN for a wedding in early January. Here in LA we don't have much of a winter so I need a little advice. What are the essentials that we need to take to be warm? I don't want to spend a lot of money on things that we are not going to use regularly but, I don't want to be miserably cold either. I don't even know what we are going to wear at the wedding... What kind of clothes do you wear to a winter wedding? What do I need to buy for the kids? where is a good place to shop? I don't relish seeing snow and driving in it but, my kids are fervently praying for snow and I will hate for them to be disappointed 
Any advice appreciated

layering is your friend.. you want things to keep you warm (fleece is great) and things that will block the wind.. so for instance.. you could wear an undershirt tee shirt, a long sleeve tee shirt, a pull over sweater, a heavy fleece pull over and a windbreaker and be pretty warm.. do you have close fitting pajama pants? those can work for long underwear pants.. wear them under jeans or skirts.
if you're going to be outside playing in snow or such.. feet inside plastic bags before putting on shoes can keep feet dry without needing to buy special footwear.
You will likely want gloves and hats.
I would check out http://www.sierratradingpost.com they have good prices on better quality things.

You could encounter anything from 40 degrees to below zero - it just depends on the weather patterns. You will want scarves as well as gloves and hats - does anyone in your family knit? Maybe you could borrow some of these items, too.
I haven't been to South Bend but we visit Indiana every Thanksgiving. People wear typical clothes to church and then wear coats. Most churches have big coat racks in the foyer/gathering space.
I must warn you that I've been in subzero temps once or twice in January there - a windbreaker isn't enough under those conditions, but you likely wouldn't send the children out then anyway. In a pinch you could bring snow inside (like in a dishpan!) - I used to do this with my daycare kids.
You can probably get some good online deals (Land's End, Sierra Trading Post) - Sears sells Land's End stuff in store and they have had some great deals lately.

We often visit dh's family in MI during the winter. I hit thrift store or borrow from friends heavy jackets for the kids. If they are going to play in the snow, they really need more than knit or fleece gloves and mittens. I have found ski gloves for very little at discount stores and thrift stores. The same goes for jackets. Again, if the kids are going to play in the snow, waterproof boots are much better than sneakers. Galoshes (rain boots) work just fine, though snow can work its way into those. We've been able to find hand-me-downs or cheap boots at Target. As for the adults...I've always just worn my regular clothes, then added a warm coat, gloves, hat and scarf. In fact, when we were in MI last Thanksgiving, I was SO hot. I am not used to central heat running all the time. When it gets chilly here, I put on a sweater. When my in-laws get chilly, they kick up the heat. People go from heated car, to the garage, to a heated house in the midwest.
As for what to wear for the wedding...wear what you would wear in LA, then add a coat! Really, that's what I would do. When we go to Mass in the winter, dh or his dad would always drop the ladies and kids off at the door of the church and then go park the car, so worrying about shoes, etc., wasn't a big deal.

I wonder if people look several pounds heavier up-north
Thanks for the ideas Jodie. I never would've thought of the plastic bags.
Nancy, the idea of the dishpan is great. Another one I would never had thought on my own. Of course, I think my kids imagine themselves having snowball fights and building snow men,etc. I don't think a dishpan would satisfy them...
Lisa, I was thinking on checking some Goodwill stores on the way over there for extra clothing. The Goodwills here don't have much winter clothing. I do have to check Target, I remember seeing some rain boots there.
I just discover I will have to buy a new coat for myself. I can't zip my up! it is too tight around the hips

Hit the after Christmas sales, Natalia. I hear they're going to be huge this year as stuff just isn't moving off the shelves. Even Goodwill down in LA might have some great wintery stuff after Christmas as people offload what they bought for Christmas travel after they get back?
