Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

What kind of Nativity sets do you have at home? I am not talking about children nativities or play sets. And if you are like me and still don't have an "adult" version, which ones do you just absolutely love?????

Can you tell I am on the look out/

Fontanini! They are beautiful but made of unbreakable material. Pricey, for a big set but you can start out small and grow each year.

FYI: Fontanini are not completely unbreakable. Ask me how I know. They are very durable and will tolerate a lot of toddler play time though and are our choice for nativity pieces that can be left in reach of a small child. Just wanted to mention that they can be broken especially small appendages like Baby Jesus's hands.

My dream is for a set of the Ostheimer -- here's one version and another view. I LOVE these but hard to explain $300 at one fell swoop!

But then Erin posted about Nori's sets ... and they are GORGEOUS! -- I'm going totry these for next year .... I hope!

I guess I have been lucky. We had a big New Year's Day open house a few years back and a few of my nativity pieces went missing. In the spring, I found them way out back no worse for the wear and the weather. I was pretty impressed and happy that it was probably just a toddler wanting to play with the toy animals and not a sticky fingered guest!

Those wooden sets are just beautiful!

This is the online store of friends of ours. I think they have lots of beautiful (and unique) options, and they are not made in China (if that is a concern for you).

My favorite is the Christopher Collection nativity my dh bought me the Christmas before we got married.

I have a larger set (about a foot high) that we bought my mil a few Christmases before she passed away. I inherited that one.

Then, as a family, we are slowly collecting the Fontanini nativity/village because I want those to enjoy with my grandchildren. Preplanning, ya know. . The two sets I have now are not child-friendly.

Jen L., late last night I ordered the Holy Family that you pictured above from Jim Shore. It was a very impulsive click on the computer It was on sale, because it is no longer being produced. I don't know what my dh is going to say, but I hope he likes it.
It is just tooooooooo easy to order on the internet.

I did look up all of your recommendations and am thankful for your contributions.

This is the one we have, and I love it. I had always had my granmother's very large, breakable set until one year I gave it to my niece (who was thrilled) and I treated myself to the Jim Shore one. I didn't know it was out of production...does that mean I have something worth some money? No matter, I love it anyway!

I just use my traditional Santons de Provence one. Family members send me new santons every year and it is slowly growing. It is so fun for me to pass down the tradition to the kids as we listent to the Pastorale as we build our Nativity.

Glad you got one, Stephanie. I didn't know they were out of production either.

And I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN about ordering on the internet. I'm frugal in real life, but online I am much more easily spend money. Like it's play money!

Mattie -- this is so cool! We just finished a Christmas read-aloud by Alta Halverson Seymour called The Christmas Donkey where santons figure prominently in this Christmas story about southern France. How cool that you posted a link so the kids could see these. My mom had a set we used growing up but I think another sibling got the set !

I have never seen the Santons before but they are lovely. Slowly collecting them sounds wonderful.

I am reading this thread with renewed interest again. We have a decapitated shepherd and a disected wise man. I gave the kids a Playmobile to play with, and a Fisher Price, but they want to play with the one that "clinks" when you hit them together....

I once had a very reverent looking set from (I THINK*) Dumb Ox. It was that plastic resin material and unfortunately a few of them died and I wanted to replace it as it was a great set for little hands.   Does anyone know what I am talking about and where I can get a replacement? It was on the small side and fit really well in our O Antiphon house...

God love you!

Thank you SuzanneG! It is the right page.

Yeah, I am glad i could help Mary G.

Jen L, I love collecting those, it's so fun! And they are very inexpensive back home in France! I forgot to mention that, the prices on this one website are just outrageous I had not looked at them when I posted

Anyways, this is a very fun thread to follow! Nativities are so great!

Merry Christmas to all,
Mattie

I was going to post about how much I love santons! Also, I love the Ostheimer sets; I'd love to have that elephant as part of our scene. We started out with a very cheap wooden stable and plastic figures, with the idea that the dc could handle them without giving me heart palpitations. Since then, we have added all sorts of mixed up critters and characters, that are probably not very aesthetically pleasing taken all together. It reminds me of the spirit of the santons -- a conglomeration of people and animals that likely would have been in and around Bethlehem. There are a couple of real santons in the group, but also a knitted Peruvian Flight into Egypt with indigenous Maria, Jose, y Jesus riding out of town on a llama. This year's new addition is a Polish pottery rabbit. I find the whole thing very meaningful, but, as I said, it probably looks kind of crazy to someone not in our family.

Peace,
Nancy
