Last winter we did pretty well, we kept our thermostat at 65 during the day and maybe 62 at night. This year I decided to go down a few more degrees, 63 during the day and 60 at night.
I am COLD! I must have gotten wimpy over the summer. Anyone else freezing??

ME! Mine is DEFINITELY not as low as yours, but I am so cold! I think last season I was cheating.....I was pregnant with about 40+ extra lbs! I keep trying to lower it, but I am finding my kid's rooms are waay too cold, and it makes me feel like a bad mom when they are cold.

I'm just like Fuzzy. I'm not pregnant, and I'm cold now! I'm still carrying the extra weight, but not the hormones. We're not doing anything special with our thermostat (66 at night, 67 daytime) because we have a baby. But for once in my life I'm wearing socks to bed. For me, that's cold!

OK, am I missing something? Aside from saving money on heating, is there some value in keeping the temps extremely low? We normally keep our house between 67-69. Its extremely windy where we live and on the bitterest days, having it set at less than 69 feels just miserable. And when we drop it much lower than 67 on milder days, certain rooms are just *freezing*. I think it depends on one's house, too. I used to be able to keep the thermostat lower in a different home we had. Either the wind hit it differently, or it was insulated differently, or something. I know that homes that are well into the 70's can sometimes keep viruses alive, but I don't think anything under 70 does that, does it?

I think the only thing you are missing, Books, is the freezing aspect. We have the same problem with our house, we just can't keep it colder. It's freezing.

Pretty cold here too!
Our central heating is set at 60 during the day and turns off completely starting at the kids' bedtime (we live in California, so it doesn't get *too* cold here at night). We do have a space heater in my kids' room for during their afternoon nap and overnight; I think their room stays in the mid/upper 60's when they're sleeping.
Once I give birth in January, we'll probably need to raise the house heat a bit because I don't want to have to keep the baby bundled all the time. But until then, yep, I'm definitely chilly! Funny thing, though: my crazy husband is still wearing shorts around the house--he loves it cold!

We were 63 during the day last year and no heat at night but we lived in DC so the lowest it ever got at night was 58. I was freezing all last winter but I guess pregnancy is keeping me warm this time around. We have it at 63 still and I'm fine. We got down to 53 at night but we can close off the bedrooms and we have to run a humidifier regardless so that keeps us warmer at night. We do need to put a blanket around my early-bird daughter so she can eat breakfast but she doesn't seem to mind. We're in Minnesota now and it is SO COLD here. I'm thinking of trying out the heat even lower to save money before we have to have a warm house for a newborn.

We keep ours at 67 during the day (wimpy) and 62 at night. It worked well for us last year and the kids don't complain and aren't cold but I am. Oh, my, I'm freezing. I am usually very cold during the first months of my pregnancy and I'm freezing.

We've been keeping the main thermostat at 55 here...using two small space heaters set at low for supplememtary heat, and occasionally relying on heating pads when we just can't get warm enough. So far, with extra layers of clotihng, and double socks, we're doing okay. We did turn the heat up to 62 when we all had the flu this week, but now that we've recovered we're back to 55...it sure beats the cost of extra propane!

65 in the day and 60 at night. I'm cold right now, but if I went and put on some extra socks and a sweater I'd be fine. This was one of those days where it was warmer in the morning than now; so, I think it never got down to 65 earlier. We're in a row home, and our neighbor keeps her thermostat really high!
Books, I think that the other advantages to keeping it lower is it not being so much a shock to your body when you move in and out of doors and the forced hot air (if you have forced air) not drying out nasal passages and such.

Dh won't let us get too low here because there are some things that are affected badly by the cold, other than humans
Like his guitars and such...so we aren't totally freezing here! But I enjoy hearing about you guys (we are at 65 both day and night I think)

I think this is my biggest push for keeping the temps lower in our apartment - my mother used to keep our homes really really warm (we had a couple of years of living without heat for weeks at a time, and while that's a whole other story, she really made up for it when she could!) - and I remember always having problems breathing in the winter time. Only as an adult did I figure out it was the extreme temperature change. Just a few degrees makes a huge difference.
I am fortunate in that I like to bundle up in my cozy sweaters and robes (I'm so cold-blooded) and my son could run around in just underpants in the snow and be happy (he's very hot-blooded!). So he's good with anything, and I like to snuggle... We have our thermostats set at 60 in the bedroom and living room and 55 in the other rooms (we have separate thermostats and heaters in each room, which is GREAT) - our bathroom is centrally located so it stays warm. And we're on the top floor so all the heat from below keeps the floors warm.
I was still not happy with our electric bill (which includes the heat), but it wasn't terrible - I'm pretty much never "happy" with a bill anyway :)

I keep the thermostat at 65 during the day (we're in CA, so it rarely turns on during the day), and 60 at night. I was turning it off at night, but our house is poorly insulated, and the upstairs was dipping into the 50's at night. All the kids would end up in our bed because they were so cold!

Right now we are at 67 (one degree lower than last year) but our last electric bill was close to my $200 limit, so I anticipate more indoor icicles if next month's bill goes up. Dh got home today, so he'll make sure my son keeps a good fire going from now on (when we are home). That will help.
Everyone hates my frugality program (80 degrees is ugly in MD in the summer) but it's working. Every year I adjust each season by a degree.

We are in a little different situation, I think than most, due to the fact that so many of us live in "the little house." We are in central NY and we have had a few below zero days around here, but our temperature routine has not changed-yet.
At night the thermostat is set at 55, and still most of the boys hardly wear anything-- The littles wear fuzzy sleepers with undershirts, and the girls usually a t-shirt and shorts. In the morning I kick the heat up to 60 while everyone gets up-usually they are wrapped in an afghan for awhile-(these are the kids that aren't wearing much to begin with).
I then turn the heat off--all we need to do is have everyone start moving around and the temp usually reaches 70 and at this point, people start stripping clothes off. WHen someone uses the stove or bakes, the whole house rises a few more degrees-after cooking dinner, I often find that the boys have cracked their window open because it is "getting too stuffy around here."
With 4 people per bedroom, the heat rarely even comes on at night---now if I could figure out how to conserve hot water-we could lower our natural gas bill even more-but the kids keep getting dirty.

I have my thermostat set at 60 day and night. It was at 62 but I decided to bump it down. My dh just got home from being gone since the beginning of Nov and he is freezing. I get chilly but I just wear a wool sweater and socks a lot. My kids run around with no socks and sweaters, silly gooses! I am always telling them to get socks on. My electric bill came today and was pretty low so it encouraged me to keep it up (which is when I decided to bump it down to 60 )
My mom is coming back to live with us after the first of the year sometime and she is always so cold, so I am enjoying the cold in the house while it lasts. I am going to have to check the thermostat regularly when my dh is home so he doesn't sneak and turn it up
I wish I was pregnant to keep me warm

Ours is set around 63 day in, day out. Sometimes a degree up, sometimes a few degrees down, but not much. We have a big wood burning fireplace, with a VERY good blower on it. If we get it going, and set the ceiling fan on, the fan moves the air down the hall thru the rest of the house...woohoo.
Now, we've got some nassssty weather headed this way early next week...so we're getting the wood brought in, and making sure everything else is taken care of.
I am still not working on the window quilts. UGH! GOT to get that done/going...

We live in a cold climate,in a big,old *breathing* house.
We keep the temps to 60 at night, and 62-64 during the day-usually 64 if one of us is sick. Sometimes,we turn the stat down to 56-58at night.
Warm socks, slippers, sweaters, and throw blankets are the key to warmth here! I have been known to NOT answer the door,if it's a day, where I've been wearing a hat! I look silly, but it helps keep the chill away!!
I am so darn mad at myself, for not winterizing soon enough! We have 15 windows to cover with plastic, and we still need to get a foilwrap for thewater heater.
Brrrrr!!!!

Brrr. You ladies are great. Here I am in San Antonio complaining about the cold. We came in the other night and my dc were so cold they were putting on layers of clothes. I looked at the thermostat - it was 69 degrees!!! I do miss the snow though - my DH thinks I am crazy!

We have it at 60 during the day and 50 at night. Our house heats unevenly, so it is warmer in the basement and upstairs (we have a split-level, so the basement is directly under the upstairs, with the main floor offset). The living room is always chilly, and the kitchen is really cold. I think that we need to add some insulation. We use space heaters also, so that we aren't totally numb!
