Our Parish will not be having a Midnight Mass. 10pm vigil or 9am Mass.. and we have my family here who aren't Catholic which makes the 9am Mass incredibly difficult.
And we've gone to Midnight Mass for the last 11 yrs (plus any time we were with dh's family before that, plus he went with his family for years when at home as a child)
And a vigil mass just is not the same.. it's not celebrated AS Christmas, it's still in anticipation of.. and it's just soooo dissappointing.
Last year they sprang (this parish had had Midnight Mass for YEARS, new priest) a change to the Vigil Mass on us the week before Christmas. but we'd hoped that he'd change this year.. but no..
I'd go to another Parish for Midnight Mass in a heartbeat rather than the vigil mass.. except that the distance, mountain roads and weather make that iffy at best.

Oh, Jodie, I feel for you. It just doesn't seem the same. There are quite a few churches here that went to earlier "midnight" Masses for awhile but have tended to go back to the real thing in recent years. I know for years the midnight Mass at Father's former parish did the 10 PM thing. Haven't been there for Christmas in a few years so will have to ask my parents if it has changed back since there is a different priest. My mom may have some ideas on Father's reasoning and if there is hope of getting it changed back in future years.

The logistics are simply a nightmare.. 10pm is too early for my kids.. they'll be up and excited and not wanting to fall asleep which means they won't behave well at all in Mass. At least at midnight they just go to sleep and I can actually pay attention for a change Plus grandma will be at our house. so we'd get in late with active awake kids rather than getting in really late with sleeping or almost sleeping kids. Makes a great deal of difference in the noise level.
But trying to figure out how to manage the 9am.. with my family not being Catholic and all.. I guess we'll just kick grandma out to go to my sister's house for a while.
If weather and road conditions permit we might go up north if they have a Midnight Mass.. that's over an hour and anything else is further.. even if we could get the time zones to work for us.
Plus I've really liked that the first thing we do on Christmas is go to Mass. But we won't be able to get the kids to wait until after Mass at 9am without causing more strife than it's worth.
Out of the bad choices for us (obviously others will like the choices) I supposed the 9am Mass will be marginally better simply because the time of day will work better for the kids for during Mass.. though we'll likely have to do stockings and then go to Mass and then do presents.. which will cause a whole other set of being restless at Mass.
I think whatever we do we should probably write a letter pointing out that it's a hardship to manage these other Masses for some.. that it's not making life easier "for everyone".

Oh, dear. I'm sorry you have so few options. I guess I should be thankful for our small church building - it means we have to have lots of Christmas Masses (two at 4:00 PM, two at 8:00 PM, 10:00, midnight, and three on Christmas Day).
I do think it's worth discussing this with your pastor (after Christmas?) to see if things could be changed for next year.

hi jodie,
would it be possible for the children to open any of their gifts on christmas eve? possibly ones from family members.
that might help ease the excitement and gift anticipation factor of christmas day.

I'm sorry for your loss, Jodie. Just so you don't feel alone...our current large and well attended parish doesn't offer a Midnight Mass. (I've been curious to know if Midnight Masses are more of an east coast tradition than west?) Perhaps you can offer up your loss as part of your Advent preparations? Praying you are blessed in a surprising way this Christmas Eve and day .
Love,

Our parish doesn't have a Midnight Mass.
For us it may have something to do with having only one priest between two parishes.
Father will have Mass at 10pm, at 7am Christmas Morning he celebrates Mass in the next town, then comes back to our parish for the 9am Mass. I don't know how he does it (energy) but a Midnight Mass would put him past 1 am...closer to 2am before getting rest before preparing for the 7am Christmas Morning Mass in the next town.
I would love to see what the Midnight Mass everyone speaks of, but for now, you've reminded me to be extra thankful for our priest.

wow - does the next town only have a 7am Mass and that is it? Or do multiple priests go there?

We lost our midnight mass two years ago. Now we have mass at 10 pm. I agree, it is not the same. And I miss it!

Hi Laura,
They will only have the 7am Mass.
Father is the only priest for the two parishes.
Usually, they only have a Sunday Mass -- no daily Mass.

Wow - that helps me to keep my choices in perspective - and how lucky I am, I guess!
