I really need a warm winter coat. For the last several years, I have been wearing a heavy fleece jacket, but it has no shell and no lining, so it really doesn't keep me warm. Every year, the cold seems to bother me more and more, so this year, I would really like to find a warm coat. Can anyone point me to a warm, reasonably priced, non-bulky, (not made in China) coat?

The squall jackets for Lands End are nice. They also have a lifetime warranty. Here is one
I don't have it but dh's Michigan family likes them a lot and his sister with 9 children gets them for all her children to pass on down (we just got one from the bottom, lol, and my ds loves it better than any other coat he's had or has).

I would definitely concur with going with a Land's End coat. I don't know if the product is still made in WI, but I know that the coats have been tested there!

I have a Land's End coat that's made out of pretty much the same materials as the squalls, but it is longer (covering the b*tt, which I always think goes a long way to keeping warm.  ). It has a detachable hood. I don't live anywhere tremendously cold (Maryland), but I do think it's a good choice to consider.

I whole heartily agree with the Lands End recommendation. Our entire family of 7 wears Lands End coats. We live in Minnesota and spend a lot of time outside.
They have a clearance section on their web site where you can often find good deals. The items on clearance are usually just last years colors or a discontinued item.
I also agree that a longer coat will keep you warmer.

I'm a big fan of Land's End too and bought much of my DD's clothing for the winter there this year, since it was just about the only clothing that seemed appropriate for a young girl.
However, their clothing, with the exception of some of their fleece is imported now.

I'm in need of new warn jacket as well. I like Columbia Sportswear coats - very warm, but not exactly cheap. If you can get them clearanced somewhere or at one of their outlets they are more reasonable. I was just looking at some this weekend while we were in Portland and specifically checked the "made in" label. Looks like most are made in Pakistan - not China, but still imported.

Oh we love Columbia Jackets. I buy them clearence for the kids.. best deals are usually at http://www.campmor.com or http://www.sierratradingpost.com I get them for about half price or less. I just sent them a jacket worn for 3 seasons with a broken zipper. I paid shipping to them. They sent it back fixed. No charge. I have a girls jacket that was used for 5 seasons and is put away now for when my almost 2 yr old is ready for it. But for a child's jacket it's working out to be $10 or less per year of use.
Columbia has the longer parkas as well, that's the style we get for everyone.
