In the obsessive Christmas shopping thread, I found some neat ideas for stocking stuffers... I really liked the idea of including a sacramental or Christmas candle. What type of sacramental would you recommend, especially for littles?
Some other ideas I am pondering...
SIlly String- my dc think this is a huge treat, and the Dollar Tree has it for $1/can. It would be fun to save for New Years.
Motorized kid toothbrush- my dc, for some strange reason, drool over these at Target. Or just regular toothbrushes- who doesn't like a nice, new one?
At Rainbow Resources I found Smencils (cool pencils that come in a variety of scents for a buck) and a dino dice game that my ds will enjoy.
Sunglasses... we wear them year round, and I picked some up on clearance.
New socks/undies... these were always in our Christmas stockings and Easter Baskets growing up. Days of the week undies- I thought they were just so cool.

We do stockings on St. Nicholas' feast day and they are filled with gold coin candy, clementines and walnuts in the shell. In addition, each child receives a new book and we add to a couple of new items to our game box.
I can't stand the thought of them empty on Christmas morning, so I usually put fun socks or boxers in them.
On Epiphany, we do a treasure hunt and the kids find a treasure box filled with all kinds of dollar items like you mentioned above.
Christmas gifts are one nice toy per child from Santa and one wrapped clothing item for Mom and Dad.

St. Nicholas Day boots -
old fashioned candy sticks
chocolate coins
maybe some nuts or something
something fun.. sometimes individual (motorized toothbrushes) sometimes collective (new dvd)
Christmas Day stockings -
one of the big fat candy canes that you see for about $1 each)
raisins/yogurt covered raisins
packs of nuts (not in shell.. I can't handle that though I'd love to do it)
mini boxes of cereal (the kind we don't get most of the year
chocolate of some kind (lately been getting Kisses on good sales)
lifesavers
little toys like poppers and bouncy balls and flying frogs (oriental trading co is great for these)
pencils
their very own roll of tape
tangerines
apples
we've tried pomegranites before too
hotwheels
polly pockets
gum
special hot chocolate packet
any special food treat really.. I've heard of people doing cans of mandarin orange slices or olives for instance.

We give a candy like M&M's in a holiday package, something useful like a comb or cheap sunglasses, a mini can of Pringles or some other verboden treat, and 6 quarters. That seems to be a good number for some reason....I guess 6 quarters give the sock a substantial feel!
When I was growing up, we used to hang stockings at Grandma and Grandpa's in those big grey work socks with the red tops. We'd always got an orange and a banana and 3 quarters and a candy cane. This was such a big deal to us! I'm tempted to hang those work socks each year (I have 2 pairs)with a safety pin off the back or a tacky arm chair......

Lots of edible stuff. Things i dont buy dd's during the year like those fruit chew snacks and little debbie snack cakes. I think i bought them some chapstick, notepads, gel pens and some other girly items.
I'm stumped on what to get my dss.He's 8yo. The silly string is a great idea. The kids would love it.

This year, I ended up getting little finger puppets through a co-op (I went with hedgehogs to help with a fill)Folkmanis
I also got some slipper socks ($5 a pair on sale from Hanna!)since we are keeping the heat down but socks have been hazardous on their own!
We will also do clementines and have done some of the other ideas listed!

We do stockings on St. Nicholas... gold chocolate coins, speculas St. Nicholas cookies, mandarins, new scapulars, and a small gift.
Christmas stockings are usually socks, candy canes, some more chocolates, lip balms, soap, I'm going to add some of my solid shampoo this year too for the bigger kids. Maybe another little gift in there too. Haven't figured that one out yet.

My girls really wanted those new Barbie Peek-a-Boo dolls, so I was going to get those as stocking stuffers. Then I read the reviews. People complained that the dolls have some sort of rubber band around them and if you remove it the doll falls apart.

Each year, everyone gets a Chocolate Orange in their stocking, as well as a special Cadbury's bar (depending on each person's favorite). Other than that, for my DD there may be a new lip balm or pretty barrette. For my DS there may be a small tool or bookstore giftcard.

We started a tradition years ago without even realizing it! It occured to us when we overheard one of our kids say "St. Nicholas Day is coming, I can't wait to see my new toothbrush!!" So, we get new toothbrushes for our kids. Usually I buy the big package of plain toothbrushes, and for St. Nicholas Day we buy them pretty fancy ones!  Also a few candies and such.

I'm sorry if this is a dumb and way off topic question! But where do you get scapulars if you are looking for some?
I'm excited this year because my oldest is 2.5 and she will LOVE experiencing all this this Xmas. Thanks for the ideas!
Does anyone else do shoes on Dec 6 AND THEN stockings on Xmas? I'm curious b/c that's what we had growing up . . .

That's what we do. We hung stockings on Christmas Eve for years when we were protestant, which was a well established tradition for us. We didn't want to mess with old traditions (conversion was already a big enough change) so we just added shoes on Dec. 6th. No one complains about extra goodies! We put chocolate coins and a candy cane in the shoes and a religious gift from the Catholic bookstore on this day. We've given medal jewelry, veggie tales dvd's, Catholic t shirts, Tea and Cake with the Saints, all sorts of stuff. Dec. 6th is a popular day around here. We also usually have St. Nick. cookies and watch the story of St. Nick on DVD, too. We don't tell our kids that St. Nick actually fills the shoes or the stockings, so its all just for fun and they say Thanks to us. Maybe weird, but it works for us.

We do both- We have wooden bowl that gets filled on St. Nick's with a little taste of christmas to come- ie a candycane, gf gingerbread men, oranges etc and a new st nick book or statue etc. and hang our stockings,
we collect good deed straws in our stockings for the rest of advent which will be filled for christmas morning.
Our stockings always have an orange , candycane, toothbrush, chapstick, pack of thank you cards or stationary. Stickers or little plastic figures for the Mass bags, Chocolates etc

I found on Etsy.com (heavenhelpus store) stretchy bracelets with saint medals - you can choose whatever patron you need. So those are going in the girls' stockings this year, plus one on a dogtag-style necklace for dh.

I have to admit, the stockings are my favorite part. Growing up - my stocking was where I got fancy things - jewelry, etc. I scour places all the time to find cool stocking things. They will get video games like DS cartridges, I get fancy-schmancy candy, But also neat and unique stuff, card games, dice games, A. is probably getting a Flasty doll in there, J. will get the tiny lego sets, smencils, Nyokki, etc....
I am not a fan of giving neccessities in there....
Dh and I open our stockings together way late at night on Christmas Day after eveyone else is asleep. (I get really overwhelmed with all the present-opening during the day....) I love that - winding down from the day, with just the christmas lights on, the house all quiet and content, and opening those special little things from each other....
DH has to work on Christmas, but he'll get home right about midnight, so that is still the plan.....
