Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

OK ladies - my dh has the possibility of a job in Akron, OH. I've often thought about living in OH (why? I'm not sure, but mostly because it's off the beaten path from the BIG cities but still not horribly far from our families). But I know nothing of Akron or the surrounding area.

Anyone care to enlighten me? Is it a place a suburban Catholic homeschooling mama would like to live? Feel free to PM me if you don't want to share details of where you live to the world). Crowdedness? Crime? Homeschooling laws? Large family friendliness? Anything?

TIA!

Amy,

I moved from North Canton, Ohio (just south of Akron) about 3 years ago. It was the most wonderful place to live. There is a great Catholic homeschool community (ARCHE and Queeen of Angels) and there are quite a lot of homeschoolers in the area. We have lived all over the country and it was the best place to raise a family. People are friendly and welcoming. The cost of living is very low. I miss it so much! Would you be living North or South of Akron? I could probably give you some names to contact.

There is one drawback. The sun doesn't shine that much and the gray days can get to you. But the warmth of the people make up for it!

I used to live in the western Summit County area several years ago, and now live about 45 minutes south west out in the country. I was a very new homeschooler and had a toddler when we moved out here so I didn't have a chance to plumb the Akron homeschooling community very much. Tonya already mentioned ARCHE, which would be my recommendation also.

Please let me know if I can be of any other assistance!!!

Thanks everyone! It sounds like a great place overall. If things go further with the job offer, I'll definitely be PMing some of you for details!

If anyone else wants to add something, I'm all ears.

I've found there's a huge difference in overall cloud cover, the most being in the greater Cleveland area (where I grew up), lessening a bit where we used to live west of Akron, and lessening more between Canton and Manfield where we live now. The further south, the more sunshine, IME, anyway.

I am actually in the heart of the snowbelt on Monday we had 8 inches of snow my kids built 3 snowmen and a giant igloo. Today some were out in shorts as we brought in firewood from the woods and property for snow that is coming tomorrow night. No wonder I can't figure out what to do with all the clothes...I still need every season Annie

My family moved to Ohio when I was fourteen, and we've all been here since. I'm the nomad of the group because I've lived in five Ohio counties in my adult life.    My siblings all live within a half hour of my parents.
