what kind are you handing out?
I purposefully  have not bought ours yet, so here's hoping there is some left at Target and it is all on sale. I always struggle with the question of buying candy I like....as if there's a candy I dislike  .
I like Halloween, but not when my dh is away, and he has traveled about half the Halloweens since we have had children. I have not been looking forward to tonight. But now that the day is here, I am getting caught up in some of the excitement. This year might be a first for no pumpkins though. I'm not sure I'm that excited.
We are working on costumes now, my poor little ds8 was in tears on the phone with dh because we really hadn't done much for his costume, bad mommy. At first we started washing all his camoflauge clothes, but then we decided he would be Michael Phelps  . We just have to buy some gold medals. Ds 10 is going as a FBI Agent and dd 13 is going as a football player (Colts).
Care to share candy and costume choices??

All chocolate candy -- dh doesn't like red 40 and Mom only likes chocolate.  So... we have Reeses pb cups, milky way, snickers, and kit kats.
We are all store bought (although we are going through all my material and stuff to try and dress up as saints for today), but tonight we are in age order: Lion, Elmo, Knight, Red Power Ranger, Blue Power Ranger.

I pass out the cheapest candy. (I just bought ours yesterday.) I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to trick or treating - but we always end up doing it.
We have our All Saints party this afternoon too. We have been doing the same as Maryan, scurrying around and scrounging through the dress up for costumes. Since our All Saints celebration and trick or treat fall on the same day, we will only have saints.
I blogged a bit about our pred on our homeschooling blog (hey, and if anyone that is going to the party this afternoon reads this, don't tell your kids who my kids are!!

We have candy that oldest dd can eat with her braces. This is her first year not going out and she'll be handing out candy at home, so I know she'll be dipping into the handout loot

We bought Butterfingers because they were under a dollar a bag and some pb cups just for Bill to eat.
I always try for double duty costumes, but we can't make the All Saints party this year so my great ideas were wasted.
T--Knight with paper clip chainmail/St. George
A--Archer--picked his when we knew we weren't going to the party
M--Indian (got some great moccasin boots given to us)/Bl Kateri
C--Soldier/Fr. Vincent Cappodanno (servant of God)
C--Angel
J--Fireman--(thought about Fr. Mychal Judge, but it looks like that's a no on a couple of counts  )
J--angel with a stethoscope for Raphael, but he's wearing his Life is Good monkey outfit today so maybe he'll just be a monkey.
I have to admit that as much as the candy drives me crazy about Halloween, I do love the costumes.

I like the kids to get chocolate (so I can share  ) so I try and give out some as well.. but I'll pick up something really cheap (smarties this year) and give out one chocolate and one smarties to each.
We have Zorro (bought a sword, came up with the rest at home) and a Gypsy (all from dress up need to find some jewelry to finish her off) and then Winnie the Pooh, Tiger, 2 Eeyores, and Piglet. And the baby just gets to cuddle with mommy in the sling.
The Pooh Bear characters were partially bought by my mom, and by me and my oldest kids wore something twice.. and we pull them out again each time someone can fit in the piglet (2/3T) costume.. so not last year but this year and then we just go up the kids and see who can fit into which to go with the little one.. and the kids love "being with" the little one so I get volunteers easily enough. Plus the costumes are warm which is a big consideration here. The lightweight filmy purchased costumes are hard to manage here.. buy them big and layer long undies underneath.. so we try and avoid those.
We have lots of dress up so we'll be able to manage Saints from that.

Hope your weather is nice and he won't be too cold . Very clever idea though.
Speaking of weather we are going to have one of the nicest/warmest Halloweens I can remember. No need to go as eskimos this year.
Our choices are pretty non-creative this year. Dd will be a detective and Ds will be a TMNT (that would be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle). Dd usually does a very elaborate and creative costume but opted for what was easy to find around the house this year. Turtle costume is from a few years ago.
Candy choices - variety (Kit Kat, 3 Mustketeers, M & Ms, Snickers I believe). We don't really get too many trick or treaters so the family likes to get candy we like for the left overs.
We always have our traditional "mummy dogs" for dinner.

We usually have a ton of trick-or-treaters, so we have a lot of candy! Most of the chocolate that I bought last week is about gone now, however. We have Blo-pops, Pixie Stix, Skittles, 3 Musketeers, Hersey bars, mini M&M's, Dum-Dums, Jr. Mints and Snickers (okay, those are long gone).
My kids, oldest to youngest are: Teal Dragon Ninja, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Indiana Jones, and a pterodactyl (this is my third to be the pterodactyl...I love this costume!).
Our homeschool group is having an All Saints' party at our parkday this afternoon, but we are not planning to go. It's raining right now, so I don't know if it's still on or not.
Another homeschool family we are friends with will be coming over for pizza and trick-or-treating with our family. We are looking forward to it!

We only hand out candy the years that the All Saint's party is at our house; we trade off with my sister-in-law, and the party's at her house this year (Yay!)
But I keep a little anyway in case of very early Trick-or-treaters, and we nearly always buy Tootsie Pops. I think it's because my girls always thought of a lollipop as a particularly special treat, since we don't buy them any other time but Halloween, usually. And I like them because they're easy to hand out, KWIM?
When it is our turn to host the party, we get a big bag of Tootsie Pops and a second big bag of the smaller, cheaper Dum-dum pops. That way moms of little-littles can take the smaller lollipops if they know their children aren't old enough for the other ones, and if we run out of the Tootsie Pops I still have something to hand out (we get a lot of older kids/teens later in the evening, and I can't really justify buying tons of the more expensive candy especially since our girls don't trick-or-treat anymore).

I got the big bag of candy bars from Costco. We don't actually get any trick or treaters (we have a long, dark driveway), but I stock up just in case. (Just in case the kids don't enough candy I like! )

Got a bag of the tootsie roll mix (except I have been filching the junior mints out of it...) and a one with lollipops. Also Reese's but dh has been eating those .
This year, we have Indiana Jones, and a rainbow fairy.

This is the first year my kids haven't matched, or been part of a theme. I'm a little sad about that :( Colin is Luke Skywalker and Nate is a Power Ranger. Lydia will either wear Tinkerbell costume from last year or a pumpkin outfit. Haven't decided yet.
I let the boys choose the candy we'd give out and they picked Air Heads and Sour Patch Kids. I would have chosen chocolate -- but so much the better for my weight, I guess! LOL!

I usually buy candy that my son can have. That means no chocolate, and lots of red dye 40. We bought some mixed bags from Costco which has Twizzlers (wheat) and Tootsie Rolls (milk) that he can't have, otherwise it's other junk. It's not too tempting for me, so that's good. But my reasoning to get safe candy is that whatever is in my son's bag we can trade out what he can't eat. Right now his joy is doing the Trick or Treating, doesn't matter what he gets.
We have a knight who is also St. Michael, and a Penguin. The penguin has been dressed in overalls as St. Isidore the Farmer for the All Saints party, but I think for All Saints Day he'll just be an incognito priest, Blessed Miguel Pro or St. Josemaria.

Speaking of themes, I really wanted the kids to go as One Fish, Two Fish Red Fish, Blue Fish... but they thought superheroes were more fun?

Maryan, I love that idea!
As for the candy, I usually buy the chocolates: Milky Way, Hershey's, Snickers, etc. That way if there are any left over, it's something I want to eat (like I need it).

We're not t.o.t.ing, but are having some friends (non-Catholic) over for a fall party. No costumes at all.
We've got a TON of candy...four big bags of chocolate (incl Snickers, Baby Ruth's, TONS of reese's), blow pops, skittles, some other things I cannot remember right off of the top of my head...

We hand out candy, and "good" candy at that. We live in an area where you will get egged/TP'ed/whatever if you don't have enough candy.
My oldest gets to go out even though we think he is too old because he is taking the 4 year old out. He is at an ROTC high school, so he is wearing his BDU's. The 4 year old is going as Optimus Prime (Transformers), the 14 year old with a friend as the Blues Brothers, and my 9 year dd as Queen Esther.

KitKats and Smarties -- my oldest loves Smarties, and they had 5lb bags at the Really Big Store That Sells Everything.
I have, in order from youngest to oldest, some kind of princess (age 4), a character named Captain Dingebat (from a running pirate story that my 10yo has been making up to tell his little brother and sister at night -- Captain Dingebat is 6), a park ranger wearing his dad's old uniform (age 10- my husband has been many, many things in his life . . . ), and a bunch of odd socks who came home in tears and slammed up the stairs to her room because she's not in Memphis with all her friends this year. The odd socks would be 14, and she could probably use some prayers.
There's a trunk-or-treat on our town square, within an easy walk of our house, plus lots of trick-or-treating in the neighborhood, so the other three should be having a blast. Tomorrow we'll go to Mass in the morning, and our All Saints party is tomorrow night -- we'll have Our Lady of Perpetual Help (we have a doll whose head we can turn around and whose arms we can pose like the Christ Child's in that image); Saint Michael, Saint George (swords are big in our house); and . . . now I forget who the oldest said she was going to be. We make all our costumes up out of whatever's in the dressup box anyway.
Oh, we have this dragon/monster hooded towel thing, so either St. Michael is going to carry that to be the vanquished Devil, or St. George is going to carry it to be the dragon.

We have a 30's mobster and 2 "smarty pants" here (they taped candy sparties all over their pants)
I bought the candy early (cuz I always wait too long) but I had my husband hide it from me . (I'm lucky he's not gone for 10 months, Mary Chris) I bought the snickers/m&ms/almond joy/kit kat/butterfinger mix.
On Monday at our All Saints celebration, they will Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati, St. Cecilia, and St. Bernadette.
