Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

We decided to go to the Halloween store that opened by our house in search of costumes today. The three-year-old wants to be a witch. The almost six-year-old is unsure but she is leaning towards Hannah Montana, Dorothy, or a cat. She also like a Minnie Mouse costume. They are all sooo expensive, though, like $25.

I guess I'm just looking for some inspiration. Some magical discount store? Some way to snap my fingers and make a cute, cheap, and warm costume that doesn't involve any sewing and very little crafty talent. (I know I am not asking for much! )

Family Fun always offers an October issue with several ideas - they are archived on the website for past years. Their goal is to have ideas that are pretty simple to put together - no eleaborate sewing. Most are pretty warm as they include sweats or would be easy to wear underneath. We have gotten some cute ideas there before. What I like about their ideas is that even though they have some creepy/very Halloweeny ones, the majority are just cute and not necessarily trendy, which is what we are looking for.

Kmart is selling Hanna Montana wigs for $7. Not in the costume section, but in the Hanna Montana section.
The dollar store has witch hats ...$1!

Here is a witch costume I just found at the Family Fun link Mary shared.

My oldest was a little witch years ago. We kept it very simple. I did buy an inexpensive hat and a child sized broom at the store, but for the rest we just used a long sleeved black shirt and black leggings under a black T shirt (purchased at the craft store) that was about 4 sizes too big, so it fit like a dress. I took scissors and made the edges of the sleeves and the edges of the bottom all pointy. Then I tied silver ribbon around her waist to make the T appear more like a dress. If it's a warmer night, you might not need the long sleeved shirt underneath, but it's usually chilly here by then, so I was glad to have it. You could use accessories to dress it up, too, if it's in your budget. Like, now they have fun striped halloween socks that my 12 year old loves. I always try to avoid masks and makeup for the little ones, but orange nail polish might be fun (for one night).

And Michaels has this section of costumes that all come from T shirts!

Let us know what your children decide. We're still trying to decide, here, too.

I bought two yards of solid black material and 1 yard of black netting. I'm hoping that I can maybe make some sort of tunic by folding the solid material in half and cutting a head hole in the middle. Then maybe I can use the netting to make a sash/apron. My mother-in-law is going to help me since she can sew a bit.

If it's a total wash out I might try turning one of my old black t-shirts inside out and turn that into a dress.

I was going to try to make a witch hat out of cardboard with some netting over it, but I might check the dollar tree first for one.

We started brainstorming with oldest daughter last night. She bought a Hannah Montana long-sleeve shirt to wear this winter with some thick leggings (like sweat pant material). I think I have talked her into wearing that. Then we'll either get a cheap wig or maybe some yellow hair spray. And we may try to get some white vinyl pieces to make boot tops to go over her tennis shoes. I think I also have some hot pink netting (left over from making a butterfly house) that I might be able to tie into a fashion belt or scarf. To complete the Hannah Montana costume, we have a little toy "American Idol" microphone that came in a Happy Meal two years ago.

I think my MIL and I are going to work on the witch costume this week, so I'll let you know how it turns out.

With any luck we'll have two costumes for under $15.
