Okay,
First, I don't want to start a big debate, but I would love to hear your opinion on this.
The officers and chiefs at my husband's work are getting together for lunch.
The place of choice: Hooters
UGH. Am I the only one who has a problem with this?
My family has never eaten there. I am repulsed by the idea of waitresses in short shorts and tight tops.
I do not want my daughters to ever work there.
Points brought up:
-It's not a strip bar, it's just a restaurant
-people on the street every day and at the beach dress way more immodestly then that.
This may be true, but I just don't feel that as Christians we should support or attend this establishment. Is it just me? Am I being a prude and uptight?
Please be honest. I have tough skin and I won't be hurt or offended.

Laura -- if you're a prude I don't know what this makes me -- I even cringe at the billboards on I85 that advertise for Hooters and have "cute"  slogans to match. The only thing worse on the highway are the boards for the Adult shop down the road......
I'm with you, it's inappropriate and offensive.

About three years ago, while we were in Virginia Beach for a tournament, one of the moms suggested we take the team of 14yos to Hooters to "psych them up" for the next day's game.Not sure how that works--the shycing up part. They all went--except Michael. I thought it totally inappropriate for anyone and he agreed. That mom has sneered at me ever since. So what. she's wrong. Period.

You're not a prude, you are adhering to basic principles of the dignity of womanhood. Hooters reduces women to just an object. My dh and all my family (brothers in law, father, and so on) believe it is wrong to even eat there. Regardless of what they say, you're not just going there for the wings.
And if you need more food for argument, just ask to see a calendar of planned events. Almost all of the Hooters host swimsuit or wet-t-shirt or other immodest type of competitions. Inappropriate.
Would these men bring their children to a place like this? If they even hesistate a bit, it means it's more than just the food...and something is inappropriate.
Matthew 5:27-30: You have heard that it was said 'You shall not commit adultery.' But I say to you that every on who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.....
It's not easy to be a Christian. I'm not saying that all who go to Hooters are committing the sin of adultery, but we are supposed to avoid places of occasions of sin....

Yeah, what Jenn said  Their suggestion is totally inappropriate. Isn't there SOMEPLACE else they could choose?? As far as I'm concerned let prudishness prevail, we could use a lot more of it in our culture today! Stick to your guns.

My husband has been in your husband's position so many times (Hooters and worse)...sigh. He doesn't go. Early in his career (active duty military, public health service,) we accepted that he would be hurt because of his refusal to participate. Now we see that he hasn't been hurt at all. In fact, he has reaped a level of respect that we wouldn't have anticipated. Everytime we move, he goes through the same thing...invited, decline, acceptance.
I'll pray for your husband and all men who get stuck in this rotten situation.

Outrageous. Grown men grappling with this situation is one thing...14yos? Millstones come to mind.

Its different if you walk in public and you have no choice as to what people wear. Its a whole other deal to go to a place named after body parts that are flaunted on purpose, even if you claim its the food you go for. Can't support it! You're not prude. My husband would be on your husband's side. He's not alone, even if he feels like it.
Can't believe your situation also, Elizabeth. Michael is good. Hope my boys have that strength in the future.

I agree with you completely. I think it's a terrible establishment. I guess I'm a prude too 
Unfortunately, some people DO think it's a family establishment.
I agree that as Christians we need to avoid these types of places... "near occasion of sin", and all that.

Another prude here! San Diego has, for some reason, S** and the City billboards up everywhere! This for reruns mind you! I'm not exaggerating either...they are everywhere...bus stops, buses, large billboards. So far none of the kids has asked about them....

This is terrible. It makes me really mad!  Billboards are a big problem because you can't really prevent the kids from eyeing them. Luckily we live in a very conservative city and don't have bad ones. Its a matter of time, though.

I hate the billboards too! We don't have any here, but last year, when I was about to drive the 800 miles to Florida, I remembered that there would be billboards and that my 9 and 7 year olds would be able to read them(mostly for, and I use the term loosely, "gentlemen's clubs")  . A friend suggested I ask the kids' guardian angels to shield their eyes, heart, and mind. I asked, and they came through! (I should not have been surprised, but I have to admit that I had some doubts  ) I swear every time we drove past one, I'd see the kids were looking down, doing something else.

Its ironic that its acceptable to use breasts to sell burgers...but folks are uncomfortable seeing a mother modestly use them to feed her baby while in the restaurant eating those burgers!
Laura, I think you could replace the label "prudish" with "wise", "discrete", "modest", "discerning." Stay the course, girl!

That's uplifting to hear. My Army husband now in grad school has the same issues. The "social event of the season" here is the winter formal. As he put it, "Compared to kegs and bars?" When do people grow past all this? We're in our early 30s, similar in age to everyone else in the program, but our life is totally different. Why? Why? Why?
